This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected  until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

The phenomenon is so common that exposure can happen anywhere. But so few people are aware of it that it is never considered or investigated when there is a college suicide, student disappearance, or mass shooting.

October 2005:

This morning I got a chance to meet Jim Watson's family and exchange ideas with them. I now have Jim's address.  The meeting ran for about two hours and there were many interested parties there. Fox Channel 5 interviewed Jim's mother and two children.

 I now have a printout of the testimony from the trial. I asked for information that isn't in that record. It will take some time to arrange an interview with Jim.

The focus of the event was that Jim didn't get a fair trial. Both children appealed to the Judge to take action about the testimony of witnesses who made statements and claims Jim and the family say are lies.

This site argues  that Beverly Watson had a mental break caused by a conflict of physiology that was discovered in the 1960's. Subliminal Distraction - bottom of this page.

That testimony involved things Beverly had told the witnesses. If you view the pictures on the Fayette Pavilion page you can see that the story that he stalked her and she lost him in traffic at the Walmart in Fayette Pavilion. It is not possible to "lose someone in traffic at WalMart." It doesn't matter if the story happened around Thanksgiving or in January when Jim says Beverly began to look for an apartment. It just is not possible. That testimony is  quoted below.

Pictures of Fayette Pavilion that illustrate it is impossible to "lose someone" in the  traffic at Walmart  are on the VPN site page, linked below right. That was what Beverly told one of her friends. Her friend then repeated the story  in testimony at trial. It is part of the evidence that Beverly was having a mental break.

From the written statement by the family in their handout at the Fayetteville meeting:

There were statements from friends that Beverly had told them of incidents of abuse. But after talking among themselves and with police the stories changed and they said they had witnessed the incidents..

Debbie White said she had witnessed Jim point a shotgun at Beverly's head. But a second friend, Donna Spainhour, was present in the house at the time of the incident and Debbie didn't tell her that she saw anything.

The party when the incident took place happened in 1989. In 1997 Donna said Beverly told her about the incident but the gun was a handgun. By 2002 during the trial Spainhour said she witnessed the incident in the garage. ...  Jim denies any incident happened.

Note that in the version communicated to Donna the story changed in 1997. The impossible stalking incident was reported in January 1997. Debbie only communicated with police after the disappearance. (When did Beverly tell Debbie?)

Cecile Winton a neighbor of Beverly's mom She said that Jim choked Beverly while Alyce yelled at him to stop. But Alyce said the incident never happened. Jim denies any choking incident happened. Alyce died in 1998. The family says all of Alyce's statements to police disappeared.

Small details in Beverly's stories argue that they were confabulations or delusions. The events could not have happened as she communicated them to her friends.

Chasing incident and phone call:

Beverly called Debbie (cell phone?) telling her Jim was chasing her in his truck But she said he ran from the inside of the garage to the back yard where his truck was parked while she backed out of the garage and drove away. The back yard was fenced and had two dogs penned inside. He would have to have  opened the gate driven out and closed the gate. In other statements Beverly did not see Jim's "car" when she opened the garage door and drove in. Debbie related hearing fear in Beverly's voice, she was screaming into the phone while Jim was chasing her in the car. But according to the family Beverly did not have a cell phone at that time. The contemporaneous theory was that Beverly called Debbie to set up an incident that would help her in the divorce action. Debbie's failure to act by calling 911to help Beverly made the family believe the incident never happened and that there was no phone call.

If instead the event was a hallucination then to Beverly the event was happening just as she experienced it. It is not possible to determine if the accounts by Beverly are confabulations or if Debbie helped the prosecution by inventing the story. Beverly's friends who have published email addresses will not respond.

Testimony of Attorney James Bischoff:

Beverly's divorce attorney testified that she appeared in his office, January 18, 1995, "frightened, scared to death, shaking," to cancel the divorce action she had filed. He gave a statement to the Fayette Citizen on March 31,1999, that Beverly gave him evidence to be given to police if she was ever found dead. That "evidence" has never been revealed. When questioned at trial he said Beverly had NOT provided him with any evidence of the alleged abuse or any other incriminating materials to be used against Jim.

A copy of the divorce dismissal document was sent with nineteen samples of Beverly's signature to Shiver & Nelson Document Investigation Laboratory Inc. in Woodstock Ga by Ashley Watson. (A copy of the findings are in the handout from the Fayetteville meeting.)  The determination was that Beverly did sign the dismissal and that her signature "appears to be rapidly and fluently written." How is that possible? Why would her attorney lie? Note that this happened two years before she disappeared.

There is not enough information about the dissociative or psychotic condition explored on this site to reach a conclusion about this. There is no information in records I have researched  that would support any conclusion about why she signed normally while presenting an appearance of fear to the point that she was shaking.  I suspect, without evidence of course, that Betty was undergoing a dissociative mental break. Her actions to cancel the divorce was a part of the delusions happening due to her exposure from Subliminal Distraction. It is the dichotomy of the attorney saying one thing and the signature disputing his statement that raises the suspicion that there was ongoing mental effects from such exposure. (I do not have any information about her workstation at the country club to support that.)

The program, Burden of Proof, that ran again tonight had new material but they will not respond to emails about the conflict of physiology or the possibility that Beverly had a mental break to cause her death. Jim may have had nothing to do with it. An investigation to establish that she had exposure from Subliminal Distraction would prove that this did happen to her.

The phenomenon explored on this site cannot be proved when the victim is gone. But it can be eliminated by investigation.

A TV news report 3/39/2004 stated that Jim Watson's daughter was appealing the murder conviction of her father. The site www.JimWatsonFramed is now online but probably not indexed on search engines.

Jim was a business man and undercover police officer in Riverdale Georgia south of Atlanta. (I am in McDonough.) He was convicted of Beverly's murder on  evidence consisting of "Dust and Bones," the title of the 48 Hours Investigates? Mystery? story. Beverly was found dead, no cause of death, just off a rural road. There was testimony that dust from that road matched dust on her car parked in their home garage. On the site statements from interviews and trial testimony indicate the dust was just air born dust settled on every flat surface in the home garage. Another possible source was a local road she traveled mentioned near Wendy's®. Jim's version was that there had been a dispute over her behavior. When he prevented her from driving away she threw the keys in his face scratching him and walked out. She disappeared January 17, 1997, but there were unresolved accounts that she was seen by Kmart employees and shoppers. Her  body was found much later. She was a bookkeeper for Whitewater Country Club, Peachtree City.  Jim could be innocent. One of the central points presented in the trial  was that the weather, low temperature, argued against Jim's story that she left on foot. There was a dispute as to whether she wore a coat in the below freezing night. Read accounts of student disappearances on my Missing Students page.

The fact that Beverly worked long hours, up to 70 per week, in accounting, using a computer, raises suspicion that this case is involved with SPVP. The material, testimony of Krista Hinkle,  below increases that suspicion but does not prove it. To establish any level of proof the defective workstation must be found. The only picture involving a computer on the Jim-Watson-Framed  site is of Jim seated at an incorrectly designed workstation. The CPU is not in the picture. If the CPU was  out  of sight under the desk and there was no traffic or other movement in the room that workstation would not cause a problem. This is a typical home installation. The correct design would be to place the monitor in a corner position. There is not enough human traffic/movement in the normal home to cause an injury. The problem happens when there is something else in the room which repeats and rises above the threshold of detection: ceiling fans, oscillating fans or heaters, or blinking lights. The stimulus should originate within a few feet or so of the subject unless it is a source of reflected light or a point source of light. Again, the movement must be detectable in the subjects Subliminal Peripheral Vision and must appear to approach from behind, relative movement for a stationary source.

Even if it can be proved by expert testimony that Beverly Watson was killed while in an altered mental state it will serve no purpose unless Jim Watson can get a new trial. I do not know the law in Georgia but in many jurisdictions the fact of a conviction changes the presumption of innocence. Without that trial and new verdict Jim must somehow prove innocence to be released.. The phrase "innocent until proven guilty," no longer applies.

"...During lunch Beverley told us about the day before. She was supposed to look at an apartment because she was going to be moving out of the house. She went to check out the apartment. After leaving the apartments but before she got back home, Jim pulled up behind her. She finally lost him in traffic at Fayette Pavilion in the Wal-Mart parking lot.” ( Sheriff's detectives statement)

 "I was shopping at the Wal-Mart in the Fayette Pavilion. I saw Beverley coming into the store and she looked breathless and in a rush. I said ‘hey, what is going on?’ and she didn’t have time to talk which was unusual. It wasn’t until we (Debbie, Beverley and I) met the next day at the Malt Shoppe in Fayetteville is when Beverley explained that she was looking at apartments and Jim was following her. That is when she went to the Fayette Pavilion Wal-Mart which was the day I saw her looking hurried." (Police detectives statement)

 How did she lose him at Wal-Mart, as stated in the second version, if she parked and went into Wal-Mart?

Did anyone else see Jim follow her? Can Jim account for where he was on that day?

Fayette Pavilion is a large shopping area with a village appearance. Customers drive to a venue rather than park and enter an enclosed mall. Large parking areas are marked with tree lined medians. Main Pavilion entries are centered at the east and west borders at traffic lights. There are other entries paired at the front and rear of the main north and south buildings.  Traffic to the venues is restricted on two-lane connectors running north and south. Median divided four-lanes cross the Pavilion east to west.  Scattered through the Pavilion center are single and multiple tenant buildings.  Wal-Mart is an 'anchor' on the west end of a building roughly centered on the north border of the shopping area.   Traffic control within the area is by four-way stop signs.  

The story that she was looking for an apartment to move out  places the event  in January 1997, near the disappearance. Although possible, I would immediately suspect this story as odd behavior. I suggest that Beverly did experienced the stalking and told friends at the malt shop. But did it happen?

If the incident had happened at Thanksgiving the story of holiday traffic would seem to make sense. But the facts of the design of Fayette Pavilion argue that it is not possible to lose someone in traffic at Wal-Mart.

“Another time she told me about an incident when she confronted Jim about Tracy because she found out Tracy was writing his checks for him. He tried to justify this by saying she was doing some part time work for him."   Beverly would have known that Tracy worked in Jim's locksmith business.  In our family case normal business activity in the Payroll Office  (Tuscaloosa) was interpreted as sinister near the onset.  Personal Experiences

“Once, Beverley showed up at church with a broken arm, at church she was telling everyone that Todd had left a pillow on the floor and she tripped over it. A few months later we’re off together and got to talking about Jim and she mentions when she had the broken arm that he was actually the one that did it.”  It is important to learn when this story changed. If it began to change near the point of disappearance it would be an indication of the onset of the episode. In the Mary Shotwell Little disappearance, Atlanta 1965, both Little and Shields began to tell strange stories near the point of each disappearance.

There is an account from her divorce attorney that she stopped the divorce action out of  fear that Jim would kill her. That account describes her hands shaking when she signed the release for the attorney. Fear and paranoia are observed outcomes for this phenomenon.

Subliminal Distraction

In the 1960's a group of businessmen thought they had found an opportunity to build a new business by redesigning and modernizing the business office. The hired designers, engineers and scientists to  study how people use their office space and began to design close-spaced office workstations. But when the first examples were produced and sold some of the workers began to have mental events.

I was an engineering student in the 1960's and found the problem by accident. I sat in a psychology class in about 1990 where the phenomenon was discussed and explained.

Subliminal Sight and Peripheral Vision Reflexes had operated in the special circumstances the new designs created to cause the mental breaks. The designers and psychologists who solved the problem thought they had created it for the first time. The events they saw led them to believe that the episode was harmless, temporary, pseudo-psychosis.

But there had been previous incidents that can be attributed to this phenomenon.

In the 1830's mountain men, fur trappers, would over-winter alone rather than risk their cabin-mate would go berserk and try to kill them. This same mental event happens around the world. Each ethic group or culture experiences if differently.

Artisans, clerks, and small shop owners began to disappear in 1880's France. The phenomenon spread to Italy, Germany, and Russia.

There have been mental events on scientific expeditions, US Navy submarines, and Russian space missions, Soyuz 21. In 1898 otherwise normal sailors and scientists aboard the Belgica, the Belgian Polar Expedition began to go insane. The small ship had been trapped in polar ice. The redesigned whaler used a single-room living and working space. In that situation the special circumstances to create exposure to Subliminal Distraction can be created when one person performs knowledge work while others move in that person's peripheral vision. Daydreaming is enough dissociation to cause exposure. Only the ship's doctor, Fredrick Cook, remained unaffected. He maintained his normal activities.

These disappearances still happen today. The victims are college students. Colleges are unaware of Cubicle Level Protection, what it is, or why student study or work areas should be protected workspace. Dorm rooms can copy the special circumstances that allowed the 1960's discovery. Dorm rooms are two person cubicles but do not have the protective design features to prevent the subliminal detection of threat movement to cause a peripheral vision reflex.

Subliminal Sight is a small area of human vision. It can be demonstrated by a simple experiment. The phenomenon, habituation to extinction, can also be observed in that same experiment.

Subliminal Distraction refers to the properties of human senses, vision and sight, that prevent your stopping the nerve signals from eyes and ears even though you ignore the stimulus. Outside the United States Visual Subliminal Distraction is recognized as the reason Cubicle Level Protection is necessary for Knowledge workers. Here there is little mention of Visual Subliminal Distraction. The term is used to refer to trouble-some sounds subliminally perceived while you slightly dissociate to be able to concentrate to perform knowledge work.

The Conflict of Physiology is that while you do have the ability to ignore visual stimulus you cannot "stop seeing" anything in your vision field. You cannot communicate with that part of your brain that receives the stimulus from detecting movement in peripheral vision. You can't tell you brain to stop attempting to force a peripheral vision reflex. There is no memory associated with the detection and evaluation of that stimulus so that each time you acquire the movement a new reflex is attempted.

Psychology lectures in the 1990's, Psychophysics,  still contained  information about the 1960's discovery.  I don't know why it is unknown today.

This problem is so simple that the "special circumstances" can be created almost anywhere. One of the  first symptoms of this problem and exposure is hearing voices. One in three hospital patients who spend more than five days in a intensive care unit has a mental break. They tear out needles and  tubes, fight with attendants, believe that doctors and nurses are attempting to kill them. Some hear and see extraterrestrial aliens.

In single-room living spaces around the world people easily create those "special circumstances" when they weave a basket, use a loom to make fabric, make religious or ceremonial objects or clothing. Without adequate lighting each worker must sit near a doorway or window. Others entering or leaving the one room building are easily detected in peripheral vision when the worker sits at the doorway.

For over 3000 years Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga have been used to improve health and mental states. But when too many sessions are done in a compact time frame the user has a mental break. The concentration to meditate or to correctly perform the exercise provides the mental concentration and dissociation to bring the conflict of physiology into play. When the exercise is done in groups, as recommended, the movement of others near by provide the stimulus in peripheral vision to cause exposure to Subliminal Distraction. Gurus and Qi Gong masters believe that the failure to correctly perform the exercises causes the mental breaks due to mishandling powerful universal life forces. Some of those experts do recognize that these events happen when too many sessions are done too quickly.
