This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected  until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

Claude Allen

In the last few days Allen has been arrested on shoplifting charges. If he had been a teenager the story might make sense. But Allen was a presidential advisor. He had sense enough to know that there were security cameras that high end stores use to prevent shoplifting. True he did it differently than most grab and run thieves. But what he did was easily detectable by security in most department stores.

People who know him including the President are dumb struck at what has happened. They all say his is honest and this is far out of character for him.

He left a trail on his credit card of $5000 in refunds. How smart is that? The first stories say he used two stores in the scam. It is not clear if only two locations or two department store chains and several locations are involved.

That nonsense element makes me think something else was at work. Allen failed to use competent judgment. Given his position what he did can be said to have been bizarre behavior.

Allen may have begun to have mental problems. Someone who has been the number two person at Health and Human Services has better judgment than is reflected by what happened.

The latest theory involves an identical twin. Commentators are having fun with that possibility.

If this is your first visit to this site it may be difficult to explain. Look at what happened at Fairchild AFB in 1994. Lt. Col. Holland banked his B52 at such a sharp angle that it fell out of the sky. He had more hours in a B52 than any other pilot in the Air Force. In the months leading up to that crash other crewmembers had objected to his erratic behavior and refused to fly with him. On one occasion he cleared a ridge line by about three feet. There were film crews present but the video ends abruptly. Everybody dropped their cameras and ran. They expected him to impact the ridge line. Holland had lost his judgment about what the plane could do. His co-pilot grabbed the yoke and pulled up at the last minute.

Qi Gong masters believe that if they stand in groups and perform slow motion martial arts movements, katas, they gain the ability to control powerful universal life forces that are the basis of the universe. Think about that for a minute. If you maintain eyes-open meditation and wave your arms in the air in unison with a small group of people...Do you see what I mean? But guess what? It seems to work. At least users believe it does. They eventually experience an altered mental state called "opening the third eye." Some begin to believe they have superhuman or supernatural powers. The National Geographic Channel has a program "Is it Real." On the episode about superhuman powers you can see a Karate class being instructed how to form a Qi (chee) energy ball in the air between their cupped hands. They are told that that energy ball can be tossed back and forth between members of the class. Do you think the exercise is a educational tool? No the Karate master actually believes this is possible. He has the same thought and judgment problem that appears to have effected Holland and Allen. Because the judgment problem does not effect their daily life it is not considered psychotic. Some articles refer to these beliefs as psychotic-like.

How does this connect to Allen? You don't have to practice Qi Gong or fly a B52 to experience the same exposure that causes these beliefs and judgment errors. Given that there is no information that he experienced a sudden mental break the exposure would be something he did for an hour or so a few times a week.

The problem that causes these  subtle changes in mental states was discovered in the 1960's when knowledge workers using newly designed movable close-spaced office workstations began having mental breaks. The cubicle solved the problem of mental breaks in business offices. Those designers, engineers, and psychologists made a basic mistake. They thought they had created the phenomenon for the first time. They failed to understand that the problem is one of human physiology not business offices. There was no reason they should have suspected otherwise. They did not look into historical events searching for other incidents when the same conditions were present. (That's what I did once I realized the significance of the problem.)

The circumstances that allowed exposure to Subliminal Distraction are so simple that they can be created almost anywhere. Although it is usually a business office that was not correctly designed by a someone trained in Systems Furniture, the same exposure can happen in home computer workstations. Any place where you sit and concentrate while there is repeating detectable movement in peripheral vision can cause exposure. Using a computer in unprotected workspace stands out to day but there were no computers in the 1960's when the problem was discovered.

The frequency and intensity of exposure determines what happens. When too many Qi Gong sessions are done too close together a psychotic mental break happens. If exposure stops a complete recovery is usual. The altered mental states and strange beliefs happen when exposure is low and persistent. It functions much like operant conditioning. In fact you could call it, Subliminal Accidental Operant Conditioning. (link to new VPN page)

So how does this translate to what Allen did. If he had exposure it would have been low level and repeated for a long time.

Now use the fact that the circumstances are so very simple to think back in history to other events where something happened that cannot be explained today.

There is no page here for this next event because I am missing an element to argue that Subliminal Distraction caused the mental break that started a war. I have not established that normal housing in Northern China in the 1840's would have likely been a single-room dwelling.

Mohammed Rez Taheri-azar

The 22 year-old student drove a SUV into a crowd at the University of North Carolina. There is reporting that he planned the attack for some time choosing a SUV to do more damage.

He is from a wealthy family in Iran and rented the Jeep from Enterprise. Although a December 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill  graduate, psychology and philosophy, he has a fast food job at Jimmy John's Subs. There are blog posts saying that a fraternity de-pledged him because he used drugs, drank heavily, was antisocial and a loner.

He phoned 911 to claim credit for the act and said he did it to, "punish the government of the United States for their actions around the world,"  He made a statement to police that, "people all over the world are being killed in war and now it is the people in the United States turn to be killed." At the arraignment he said God would defend him as he represented himself as his own attorney, and told  the judge that he was, "thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah." He claimed to have worked on the attack for two months choosing the four-wheel drive vehicle because it could climb over and would keep going. He carried two cans of pepper spray and a knife in the event he was threatened.

The Pit is a low brick area on the quad with no vehicle access except a service road that is difficult to navigate. A picture on 'Hugh Hewitt,' shows a quarter city block depression in an enclosed quad between a student union, dining hall and two libraries.  There are trees in the depression. There are wide pedestrian walkways around and leading to the Pit.

It is not clear how he drove into the quad. One statement says that students were spreading apart when he drove slowly up to the Pit. That would seem to have been an odd decision if he intended to harm as many people as possible. He was unhappy that there were not more people in the Pit. Why would he drive slowly if he intended to harm as many as possible? If he had increased speed in a drive up the walkway, even if most students scattered, he would have run over those who could not get out of the way.  What he did failed to cause serious injuries. He hit nine people but only injured six. They were treated and released.

He waited for police a short distance from campus. He cooperated and sent police to his apartment for additional evidence. His roommates assisted the police and are not believed to be involved. 

This does not make sense. I suspect he will eventually will have a psychiatric evaluation paid for by his family.

North Carolina does not have laws about terrorism so the defendant will be charged with crimes which address the events of  the attacks, hit and run, attempted murder with a motor vehicle.

Barry Landreth

Landreth taught courses at the University of California about real estate financing While on leave he sold shares in a venture to buy real estate in Chicago and Las Vegas, then resell it for profit, Webster Realty Investors. Instead he put the money in his own account.

If anyone knew what to do and what not to do to avoid prosecution he did. The course he taught courses in was called "Master of Real Estate Development." Yet he openly put the money in his personal account then used it to buy cars, horses, and operate a Ponzi scheme. He promised returns of 190 percent in forty-five days  It's not a case of simple theft. He has a Master's degree from USC.

It's the totality of the situation, who he was, what he knew, and how stupid the actual theft scheme was, that points to some failure of reasoning.

Jennifer Wilbanks

She believed that her large up coming wedding was so stressful that it triggered fear, doubt, and thoughts of suicide. Her story ran for days. But no one asked questions or investigated a DSM diagnosis Dissociative Fugue. She was sent to a psychiatric evaluation and therapist who told her she was "running away from self."

The facts that she only took refund money from rebates to prevent her mother learning what she panned, no change of clothes, and did not eat during the episode point to a psychiatric event.

Dissociative Fugue is usually diagnosed when someone is found who disappeared mysteriously. They leave their normal life and have amnesia. If they recover they usually do not remember events during the fugue.

Taiping Rebellion

In the 1840's a teacher in Northern China, Hung Hsiu-ch'üan, had a mental break while studying for the imperial exams. Through a series of incidents over several years he began to believe he was Jesus' younger brother. (One source says Jesus' younger son.) He began to preach and eventually gathered a large following. Due to drought and famine he successfully formed an army from the poor and starving. Over a period of years they fought a revolutionary war. Estimates are that forty million Chinese died in battles. His army was eventually defeated by the English and French. Accounts vary but one hundred thousand died in the final battle. He intended to form a classless society based on Christian Principals, The Kingdom of Heavenly Peace. Scholarly articles have different dates and statistics.

The facts of his mental break are not disputed and there are mentions that he was in a coma for a week. His family tended him during the acute phase of the mental break. I just have not had time to do the reading and research to complete the loop and find all three elements of exposure to Subliminal Distraction.

Li Hongzhi

Li Hongzhi has been performing Qi Gong since he was six years old. He exhibits the same bizarre beliefs that other long term Qi Gong users do.

The National Geographic Channel has a program called "Is It Real?." On the program episode  titled " Superhuman Powers" you can see one example of a Karate instructor telling students they can form a Chee energy ball between their cupped palms and toss it around among group members. He then demonstrates using Chee energy to strike volunteer demonstrators without touching them. When challenged he has a ready answer that this energy force can be defeated with thought and physical preparation.

Li Hongzhi performs normally in other aspects of his life. He gives interviews, travels, and writes books. One is posted on the Internet and is free. (See link below.) In China his followers have been arrested for participating in the Falun Gong movement. They too exhibit bizarre behavior. These beliefs quality them in China as a cult. Some American TV programs have attempted to use this in a plot line, "Law and Order." But no one has correctly stated the cause of these bizarre beliefs.

There are several articles on-line that give additional examples of cases where Qi Gong users believe they have superhuman or supernatural powers. Users believe the psychiatric outcomes are caused by incorrectly performing the slow motion martial arts movements. Think about that for a moment. They believe that when they perform these movements in groups while using eyes-open concentration, meditation they have the power to control forces that created the Universe. They have mistaken the onset of a dissociative mental break for contact with a higher plane of existence, enlightenment.

Adolph Hitler

Sites across the Internet tell how Adolph Hitler, as a young art student, became obsessed with the Spear of Destiny. He had an experience on one of his many visits to the museum to view it. He believed it spoke to him and revealed how he would rule the world. Those sites have not understood what his epiphany actually meant.

Also mentioned in the stories about Satan worship related to Hitler is the fact that at fifteen he had a witnessed episode of apparent possession. If you are a frequent reader of this site you already know that I categorize possession as a combination of hearing voices and a dissociative mental break. The two things put together indicate he had a longstanding problem.

It explains a lot. His single minded purpose and decisions he made which caused the German Army devastating military outcomes stalked his attempts to conquer Europe and Russia.

Recent investigations reveal that the relic he captured dates to the sixth century and could not have been the original spear of Longinus which pierced the side of Jesus while he was on the cross. There are said to be several such spears in existence which claim to be Longinus' spear.

None of this proposes that he was insane. Exposure to Subliminal Distraction produces troubling psychiatric symptoms while the exposure is ongoing. But if the exposure stops the symptoms also stop. The memory of delusional episodes would remain with the person all their life. As they view the episode it was a supernatural experience. They are positive it happened as normal reality. They will not be dissuaded.

As an example there are thousands who are positive they have been abducted by aliens. No argument about the impossibility of the event actually happening will suffice to change their minds.

Look at the bizarre beliefs of some cults. Step back to the beginning of a cult movement. The leader was so persuaded of the divine mission that they actually succeed in gathering a following moving their belief system forward.

Heaven's Gate Mass Suicide - Marshall H. Applewhite

"He was usually president of everything,...He was always a born leader and very charismatic. He could get people to believe anything," said his sister Louise Winant.

Applewhite was believed to have been schizophrenic. The question to be answered is how did he convince thirty-eight other people to commit suicide with him. Subliminal Distraction is the answer.

There is a conflict in the story of how Applewhite's beginning of cult activity happened. He met Bonnie Lu Trousdale Nettles in a Houston hospital. His version is that he was visiting a friend. Another story is that he had a heart problem, was admitted to the hospital, and had a near death experience. A third story is that he met Nettles in a psychiatric hospital where he attempted to find a cure for his homosexual urges. Prior to that experience he taught at the University of St. Thomas, sang roles with the Houston Grand Opera, and was married with two children. He had been dismissed from the university after a scandal involving a male student.

He left his previous life for Nettles. They had an admitted platonic relationship. They held meetings and gathered members from 1972 until their arrest in 1974. They were accused of stealing credit cards and a car from the husband of a member of their group. By 1975 they were claiming to be space aliens.  That new doctrine was that after 1260 days their enemies would succeed in killing them. They would ascend to heaven in a cloud he believed to be a space ship.

Applewhite claimed to have a revelation while living in a campground in Gold Beach, Oregon. He said he and Nettles were prophets of the eleventh chapter of The Book of Revelations.

In 1975 he gathered 30 (also stated as 20) people after a meeting and lecture on UFO's. Their disappearance brought national attention and the term "brainwashing" was created to explain the power of cults to gain control of members.

A video from KCAL still available on CNN shows dorm room living accommodations with as many as five people in each room. There is a brief shot of an unprotected computer in one room. San Diego County Sheriff's deputies are seen in the video moving from room to room.

The group looked for a sign that the end was near. When an amateur astronomer reported, as a hoax, that there was a companion following the Hale-Bopp comet they believed that it was the sign. They actually bought a high power telescope to see for themselves. When the hoax was revealed  they were not dissuaded from their plans.

March 27, 1997 Applewhite and thirty-eight of his followers committed suicide in shifts. The purpose of this act was to discard their earthly containers and prepare for the arrival of an alien space ship traveling to earth hidden by the Hale-Bopp comet.

Regardless, the belief that you are a space alien is psychotic. The belief that you are about to be raised to a higher level of existence by aliens arriving with a comet is also psychotic.

The group had used a dormitory style living arrangement in the rented mansion. They had a computer business building websites. It is unlikely they knew about Cubicle Level Protection given the level of skill involved in their business. In 1997 computer CPU's still had bright blinking lights that could be swept through peripheral vision.

This is not evident in the beginning of the cult. But that is because no one knew about the problem thus no one recorded critical information.

Navy Capt. Lisa Marie Nowak

Captain Nowak drove 900 miles from Houston to Orlando to intercept Colleen Shipman's meeting with Navy Commander Bill Oefelein. Nowak succeeded in only spraying pepper spray through a small opening in Shipman's car window. Nowak used her astronaut training when she included disposable diapers to reduce stops along the way. Nowak, a graduate of the Naval Academy with a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, is married with three children.

She only admitted an attempt to scare Shipman. But the contents of her car, a new steel mallet, a knife, and plastic garbage bags, indicate she may have more serious ambitions. She was seen  throwing away a wig and CO2 powered pellet gun.

Exposure to Subliminal Distraction in training and missions would have increased her paranoia about the relationship with Oefelein.

What might happen it this episode or one similar to it had played out on a mission?

This is not the first event that happened to an astronaut or cosmonaut. There was a psychotic mental break on Soyuz-21. Unaware of Subliminal Distraction the Russian space agency gave twelve possible causes including toxic gases. Mental breaks have happened on scientific expeditions for over a hundred years. Unsuitable people or mass hysteria are usually blamed. There is a developing field of study called the 'psychology of isolation.' Putting two or more people in too-small single-room arrangements supplies the "special conditions" for exposure from SD. Isolation has little to do with it.

Is There a connection for all these events?

Although each of these events seems to have a unique etiology there is a pattern of exposure to Subliminal Distraction in each. In some cases it is directly observed, such as the computer business and communal living of The Heaven's Gate cult. Others have only the reference to exposure because of the activities the person had at the  time of the event.

There are  other accounts of different events in this site  that show a similar pattern.

When Mary Shotwell Little disappeared from Lenox Square, Atlanta, her car was found smeared with blood. Police immediately suspected the car was a staged scene because the amount of blood was so small. One comment was that it was not enough for a nose bleed. A pair of hose was found with a cut in them. But rather than being thrown on the floor or flung into the back seat they were neatly folded and stuck beside the seat. The day her car was found she stopped at a gas station in Charlotte with two rough looking men. She was covered in blood. Fourteen hours later the same thing happed in Raleigh, which is only a three hour drive from Charlotte. When I contacted a cold case officer he remembered that the phenomenon on this site had caused a problem for the Atlanta Police Department. They had to switch to cubicles. Investigators of the period would not have learned of the 1960's design discovery. It was thought to only be a coincidence that Little and Shields had both used the same desk at C&S Bank in downtown Atlanta.

The mistakes Little made in setting up the abduction scene happened because she was in an altered mental state probably psychotic. Her judgment had been effected.

Bizarre behavior does not just happen. There is a potential cause in exposure to the phenomenon on this site. Outside the United States it is called Subliminal Distraction. Here that term has a restricted meaning. Subliminal Distraction happens when neural impulses from sensor cells in your eyes and ears continue to be sent to your brain even though you are  dissociating to concentrate on something such as reading or using a computer.

When those sensor cells are located on the retina so that they supply far peripheral vision to the brain, they will detect movement to cause a vision reflex, break your concentration, and warn you. If you can learn to ignore the detected movement those efforts are subliminal because you can't turn the brain system off when you successfully ignore the distracting movement. The efforts of your brain to force a startle and vision reflex are also a Subliminal Distraction. (bookmark Definitions  bottom of this page)

When this happens your subconscious mind is bombarded with the 'subliminal apprehension of threat.' Over days and weeks this begins to shape thought through paranoia or fear. Each person's reaction and thought process is different. A sudden intense rate of exposure will cause a sudden but temporary episode. A dissociative mental break. The experience from Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga is that low levels of exposure over long periods will create fixed altered mental states.
