The two buildings. 3500 and 3525 Piedmont Road, sit opposite each other and have football field size parking decks.

Because there was no information available at the time, the judge ruled that the shooting was not predictable by either company. This site points out that the failure to use Cubicle Level Protection for the trader's computer terminals exposed them to Subliminal Distraction. SD was discovered in the 1960's because it caused mental breaks for office workers. Barton created the same situation at home when he placed his computer in the living room of his Stockbridge apartment. His wife and two children provided the movement in peripheral vision to cause the critical extra Subliminal Distraction exposure that led to his mental break.

Like Seng-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter, he acted out his paranoid psychotic delusions.

This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

Since this Atlanta event 1999, there has been a mass shooting at Virginia Tech, 2007. Cho, the shooter, set up the same "special circumstances" for Subliminal Distraction exposure as Barton.

Cho used a laptop in the suite common room while roommates walked by ignoring him. He increased that activity in the month before the shooting.

Barton set up his computer in the living room. Several newspaper articles and on-line news services mention it was located there. Neighbors said he was addicted to the Internet. His children said they couldn't use the phone because he was always on the computer.

We will never get inside the minds of either of these killers. The most that can be done is to find locations they engaged knowledge work and statements in news reports that allow us to conclude that Subliminal Distraction caused both shootings. There is such evidence in both stories.

I have one more lead to follow when my health permits.

Everyone had an opinion when Mark Barton killed his wife and two children with a hammer. He took two handguns to Momentum Securities and All-Tech. He then killed nine and wounded twelve.

There are still articles on-line that complain no one knows why this shooting happened. But that isn't true.

The Barton shooting has many elements that point to a mental break caused by Subliminal Distraction exposure.

It is unlikely he was aware of Subliminal Distraction or that a computer located where there is repeating detectable movement in peripheral vision must have Cubicle Level Protection.

This page is a history of my investigation as it proceeds on the 1999 shooting.

Preliminary information points to the possibility that Barton had a dissociative/psychotic mental break. Most people are unaware of the need for Cubicle Level Protection.

When this problem is recognized it is because a Knowledge worker has a sudden mental event at work. Office staff observe the dissociative event. These were traditionally called "nervous breakdowns."

No one has made the connection when someone just snaps, reacts violently with little evidence as to the cause of the sudden violence. Every thing from hand guns to violent video games have been blamed when a mass shooting happens.

The Mental Break Barton experienced happens several other places.

Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga produce psychotic episodes. The method of performing each exercise produces exposure from Subliminal Distraction. The common psychiatric symptoms of a failed experience with these two exercises are, fear, paranoia, panic attacks, depression and thoughts of suicide.

There have been inquiries attempting to find out why participants who just sit in the audience at this seminar have these mental breaks. No one has solved that puzzle before, but it is Subliminal Distraction exposure.

MSNBC recently ran a documentary on the Barton shooting. If you watched the interior video footage of the Day Trading companies taken after the shooting, there was a shot of computer terminals placed side by side on a long table. There were no protective features for those terminal workstations. The Explanation of why this is important.

The program was called Dark Heart-Iron Hand, Out for Revenge. It aired again Saturday July 2, 2005, and Saturday April 22, 2006..

Recent news photos of video game playing businesses show payers sitting side by side at long tables. There are no vision blocking panels in those photos. There have also been reports of violence by video game players using those businesses.

In a second airing of this documentary a police investigator said that the first thing he saw as he entered the Stockbridge apartment was the computer. It that is true then the computer was in the main family room of the apartment. That would expose Barton to Subliminal Distraction if he used the computer as other family members walked by him.

Day Trading companies have direct hookups to the stock market ticker feed so that stock price changes happen in real time. Most all other sources for stock information on the Internet have the stock prices delayed as much as twenty minutes making it impossible to "Day Trade" based on information from those general sites.

Fifty thousand dollars is required as a deposit to obtain a seat at one of those terminals. A charge is made for each transaction through the system. A trader might make a thousand trades each day holding the stock for short periods betting on short rises in value.

Stories on line cite Barton's losses at over a half million dollars. This is stated in different time periods so that each story has a slightly different amount for his loss. Bear in mind that other investigations argue that almost no one stays ahead by Day Trading.

Barton left a note in which he described unbearable fear.

One source quotes a neighbor as saying he spent most of his time at home on a computer.

The phenomenon on this site does not create murders, suicides, and sudden disappearances out of nothing. Accidental Operant Conditioning acts to shape or reinforce previously held beliefs, current disputes, or in this case personality traits.

This appears to be a case of sociopath meets Subliminal Distraction.

Barton's History

Barton is reported to have been a loner in high school but a finalist in the Merit Scholar program. A co-worker in Texas said his personality changed while he worked there. He went from a harmless prankster to outbursts of uncontrolled behavior when he was unable to solve chemical problems with products. She recounted incidents of throwing things in his workplace.

He began come in to the business at night to copy chemical formulas, put important business information on his own computer and finally was fired. He returned, broke in, and destroyed business computers. The employer settled the issue by having him leave town rather than be prosecuted. He went to Atlanta.

"Searching for help, Barton went to the Jehovah's Witnesses for instruction. His wife had left him over money, he told his minister, but he couldn't stop gambling on stocks. "It was a fever that he had," the minister, who did not wish to have his name used, told NEWSWEEK. Barton said he was waking up in the middle of the night, and feared that he had inherited some kind of undefined mental imbalance from his father. From the Bible, he began reciting from Revelation 21:4 ("and there shall be no death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain"). Newsweek Highlighted for emphasis.

Cherokee County Alabama

In his last notes Barton again denied he killed his first wife and her mother. Monies he lost came, at least in part, from insurance proceeds from his wife's death/murder. Her life insurance policy had been taken out just weeks before the murder. The insurance company disputed the claim. His settlement for the $650,000 policy was for $300,000 for him and a trust fund of $150,000 for the children.

Officials in Alabama are still convinced he committed the two murders.

Atlanta

Barton lived in Morrow, a small area south of Atlanta on I75. Neighbors are quoted as saying he 'was on his computers all the time.' Other sources say he left several computers in the Morrow house when he moved to Stockbridge and that there were as many as three phone lines to that house.

Dual computer set ups pose a risk for exposure to stimulation in Subliminal Peripheral Vision. On screen movement on one monitor while you are concentrating on the other can be detected in peripheral vision. When the movement is vigorous enough to cause a reflex, your brain will attempt to create one. The conflict of physiology is that while you can ignore the reflexes you can't 'stop seeing' anything in your vision field. You can't tell your brain to stop attempting to break your concentration with repeating subliminal reflexes.

Because the area of your vision field that detects movement to create these reflexes operates subliminally, once you ignore them you will be unaware that they are still happening.

Movement of family members walking beside the computer can also be detected. The source of detectable movement can be strange. On the Everquest Connection page an aquarium, about an arm's length away, was the source of stimulation for Tommy Stein. I have an email from actor Ben Stein confirming that a "large fish" was in that tank. The Everquest Connection was the first page on this site. It has an explanation of the simple first-semester psychology that causes the mental break.

The explanation given in the lecture I attended was, 'as the subject continues to ignore the repeating peripheral vision reflexes a conflict arises in their mind which then builds to a mental break.'

All suits against the two Day Trading companies were decided in their favor. The judge said that they could not have foreseen that Barton would shoot anyone. But the companies failed to provide basic protection by placing each trader and their terminal in separate small cubicles.

This site had a flurry of hits from law firms and other financial companies after the initial posting of this material.

Had the families known of the requirement for Cubicle Level Protection they might have won the suits.

Why weren't others effected? Who is to say that they weren't. Most Day Traders lose money. Panic attacks, relationship problems, losing sleep and other symptoms happen with exposure to Subliminal Distraction. No one knew to ask survivors about symptoms they might have had.

Remember, Barton had computers at home. Neighbors were reported to have said he spent most of his time on those computers. A detective who entered the murder apartment in Stockbridge said the first thing he saw was the computer and note on top of it. That means he put the computer in the family room where his children and wife would walk by him as he concentrated to use it.

The rare occurrence of the injury establishes that is difficult to create enough exposure to cause an injury. But when it does happen the consequences are serious, possibly fatal.

Our personal experience was intermittent human traffic during eight-hour workdays for thirty calendar days.

If you have a tower CPU mount it under your desk. That's the way they position it in a cubicle. The hard drive busy light is about the height of your low peripheral vision if you put the tower on the desk. Desktop reading of text or writing notes beside the keyboard on the side of the monitor away from the tower makes the blinking hard drive busy light appear to approach from behind when you turn to view the screen again.

If you have a computer work station/desk in which you turn ninety degrees to write or do other non computer work, turn off the monitor when you turn aside. Remove screen savers in this instance. The movement, animation for example, in your screensaver, two-dimensional movement, might well be detected by your peripheral vision at close range. Alternately cover the monitor screen.

All home, apartment, or dorm computer workstations are in unprotected workspace. To change that put the computer in a quiet room with no possible movement. If that is not possible in a dorm or apartment position the computer so that your peripheral vision can see only stationary walls as you use the computer in a busy room. In Cubicles and 'Systems Furniture' these protective features are achieved with peripheral vision blocking panels and corner seating positions. It is called 'Cubicle Level Protection.'

If you use computer or CD-ROM games for many hours day after day, the game playing position should follow the same rules as the computer workstation. Battery operated games will not run long enough on a single rechargeable battery to cause a risk for SPVP.

Although a laptop does not have a visible blinking light in peripheral vision the same rules apply to your work position. There should not be human traffic moving to you from behind. There should be nothing behind you, which could enter your subliminal peripheral vision field as you turn your head while working at the laptop and be mistaken for threat movement.

Only movement coming from behind you into your Subliminal Peripheral Vision can cause a peripheral vision reflex. If the movement source approaches you from ahead then enters your Subliminal Peripheral Vision from conscious sight there can be no peripheral vision reflex.

Repeated for Emphasis:

A single session or rare sessions will not cause this problem.

It is the same day after day long hours of play or computer use with detectable movement in ‘Subliminal Peripheral Vision,’ which would form the basis of a risk for SPVP injury.

Exposure can be cumulative

The brain’s detection system only evaluates movement. There is little recognition of the nature of the object in peripheral vision. If you have several hours exposure from human traffic at the library, while reading at an open table or seated in a reading room chair, followed by long hours watching TV with a critically misplaced ceiling fan sweeping detectable shadows around the room, the combination of those two behaviors might cause the problem. The suggestion is that either activity alone would not consume enough exposure time even if the critical movement is present.

VisionandPsychosis.Net is about a conflict of physiology that is known to cause a dissociative mental break, nervous breakdown in knowledge workers in a business office where Cubicle Level Protection is not used.

Fifty years ago engineers designing the first close spaced workstations were surprised when knowledge workers using them began to have bizarre or psychotic episodes. The problem was Peripheral Vision Reflexes and the solution for the business office by the 1960's was the Cubicle. The Modern Cubicle

The office furniture manufacturers believe this problem produces a low level dissociative episode that resolves with no treatment. That is most often the case due to the level of exposure in an office, eight hours a day for five days each week.

VisionAndPsychosis.Net argues that different levels of exposure can create other levels of psychiatric symptoms.

ICU Psychosis, Qi Gong , and Kundalini Yoga produce the same episodes for the same reason. In each case the victim can subliminally detect movement as others move near them.

In incorrectly designed hospital ICU units the patients can subliminally see the movement of nurses who attend beds adjoining them. The rate of stimulation is every fifteen minutes, around the clock, as long as the patients eyes are open. The onset happens in as little as three to five days. But almost all the patients recover when they leave the ICU unit. Doctors and hospitals are dumfounded and can't tell why the episodes happen.

Qi Gong provides a lower level of stimulation. The slow motion martial arts exercise is performed in groups. Each person attempts to enter an eyes-open Zen state to focus on the flow of Qi, (chee), in the body to balance the universal life force. Case histories from China say the victims seem to become addicted to the exercise and won't stop gathering other people to exercise with them. When the exercise is performed alone there is no movement in Subliminal Peripheral Vision to trigger the repeating Peripheral Vision Reflexes that cause this problem. When a threshold of stimulation is reached, different for each person, the mental break happens. Experts in China say that doing the kata incorrectly causes the episodes. Sometimes they stop if the exercise is stopped.

Kundalini Yoga is an intense system including eyes-closed meditation during the exercise. This stretches the stimulation in time even more. This is an effort to Awaken Kundalini, a universal life force source of energy thought to reside at the base of human spines. The icon of a coiled serpent is used. The Awakening may cause psychotic and somatic symptoms.

These three examples show that a slow persistent stimulation of the subconscious caused by the internal brain signals that create a Peripheral Vision Reflex is the most devastating form of stimulation.

The victim is never aware anything is happening to them. Detection of motion and creation of the reflex happens subliminally. Victims experience going crazy. Low levels of stimulation may be the cause of panic attacks and the anxiety disorder complex.

Limited comments from doctors using Qi Gong as treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine are that eating disorder symptoms increase when Qi Gong is used.
