News of a motive has finally appeared in print, The Commercial Appeal, April 9, 2007.
"Mary Winkler told authorities she killed her husband, a popular preacher at the Fourth Street Church of Christ, because he constantly criticized her for "the way I walk, what I eat, everything." ... An argument the previous night over family finances and an Internet scam she apparently fell for pushed her to a point where she "snapped.""
The story relates that she shot him just after waking on March 22, 2006. He was
still in bed asleep.

The material below is in chronological order as it appeared in print. __________________________To understang the point of view of this site you should have performed the psychology demonstration of habituation in peripheral vision and read the Everquest Connection. All that will be available is her version of what happened including the version of his criticism of her. The fact that she killed him in bed while he slept not during an altercation indicates some level of mental disturbance.
November 20,2006 Cable TV Program On The Record with Greta Van Susteren aired a segment with Mary Winkler's family stating that Mary had been abused. There were no specifics except that Mary had been very unhappy for some time. Being unhappy or clinically depressed is not outside the potential range of outcomes from exposure to Subliminal Distraction. Did the family knowledge come from personal observation or from accounts by Mary. Were versions she gave them true or delusional? None of this new family information explains what she did or the money she had deposited to her checking account from a Nigerian scam. She is the only living witness. We may never know what actually happened even if she issues a statement.
New information posted on-line indicates that Mary Winkler had become involved in an Internet fraud called the Nigerian Scam. She and Matthew had argued about finances before she shot him. She had deposited $17,500 in accounts over several months. The source of the money is unknown. There is mention that she said he had begun to criticize everything she did.
This still does not explain why she shot him. Had he threatened to call the authorities? Or is there another explanation for the sudden out of character event. She has shown symptoms of psychosis.

Members of Selmer's Fourth Street Church of Christ were puzzled when Minister Mathew Winkler failed to appear at midweek services. But they were stunned to find him dead, shot in the back in the parsonage. His wife, Mary, and three children were missing. On Friday news sources announced she had been found in south Alabama with the three children. A patrolman spotted the van because he had the amber alert from Tennessee.
Interviews with church members indicate that the shooting is an impossible event given the known facts about the couple's relationship.
There is no current information that she might be a victim of exposure to Subliminal Distraction.
Typically victims act on delusional beliefs. In our family case Connie believed that managers had tapped her phone "to get something on her to fire her." My wife believed that thousands of dollars had been lost because of mistakes she made performing accounting reports to pay insurance premiums from payroll deductions. We thought she might be having small strokes due to the use of Prempro®. But an exhaustive neurological and psycho-neurological work-ups found nothing. An MRI performed months later confirmed the results of that first MRI. It was several weeks before I remembered the office design problem I found while an engineering student forty years ago.

The police know the motive for the shooting but won't say what it is. Why won't they say? Because it is probably delusional and impossible.
The story now coming out is that she and Matthew were involved in a "dangerous situation" but she thought no one would believe her. Police reported that a condo had been rented in Orange Beach Alabama but not used. It is being suggested that the shooting was accidental. There still is not enough information to conclude she had a mental break.
One psychologist interviewed cited a case where the shooter believed that the family member had been replaced with a double and the only way to get the real family member back was to kill the double. There is no way to predict what she might have said to police. But it will be something like the psychologist's suggestion.
On March 28 an interview on Fox News with a psychologist included a mention that Mary said nothing on the trip from Orange Beach back to Selmer. The speculation was that she had some form of PTSD. This differs from the account that she confessed on the return trip.
The fact that she took all three children argues against Fugue causing the running away. In other cases, Mary Shotwell Little and Dianne Shields, the women believed bizarre stories. They had told stories to coworkers that could not have happened.

When Jennifer Wilbanks ran away she had strange reasons for what she did, not taking enough money, no change of clothes, and not eating for a day or so.

Interviewed on CNN, Pam Killingsworth, church member, school principal and music teacher says that she just cannot comprehend what has happened. She had contact with Mary Winkler and two of the children several times each week and said this is not the person she knows. "This just can't be happening," she said.
Jim Whittington also interviewed on CNN, was a day to day acquaintance of Matthew Winkler. He revealed the same confusion and amazement at the possible outcome that Mary killed Matthew.
News reports are stating that police know the motive, it is not infidelity, but they won't release the information. A shotgun is being mentioned as the murder weapon.
An interview with the State of Tennessee Medical Examiner, Dr. Bruce Levy, the autopsy revealed that he was shot one time in the mid-back from about three feet away. The Medical Examiner said that unless it is a shot to the head victims of serious shotgun wounds bleed to death in a few minutes. The body was found in a bedroom lying face up on the floor. There were no signs of pathology evident in the autopsy.

Kevin Underwood used the screen name SubSpecies23 for his blog where he kept a diary. He lured Jamie Rose Bolin, age 10, into his apartment apparently with plans to kill and consume her. Meat tenderizer and barbecue skewers were found in the apartment. He hit her on the head with a cutting board then suffocated her and covered her with duct tape.
Underwood complains of severe depression and panic attacks on his blog.
In the Underwood story we have three components of exposure to Subliminal Distraction. He had a computer, spent most of his time playing online games, and complained of panic attacks and depression. It is unlikely that there will be immediate evidence of how the computer was placed or if there was a source of movement near it. The fact that he had panic attacks increases the probability that he was exposed to Subliminal Distraction.

There is a movement to limit the sale of violent video games because it is believed they contribute mass shootings and school violence. It doesn't matte what the content of a video game is. The problem is where and how the computer workstation is set up. Underwood would have been exposed any time he used a defective computer workstation no matter what he did on-line. Although it is impossible to get inside police investigations to establish this, the frequency of the use of his computers and video games raises that probability.

School and authorities are at a loss to explain the sudden unexplained shooting of Michelle Danielle Mielecki by her long time boyfriend Andrew M. Brown. He shot her seven times in the torso then committed suicide with a single shot to the head. Neighbors heard shouting just before the shots.
"..."You just have two good kids from good families, and for whatever reason something just snapped in the head, and now we no longer have our children," said Ms. Mielecki's father, Tom. ..."

Explaining Subliminal Distraction Exposure
The phenomenon on this site was discovered when it caused mental breaks for knowledge workers. They were using the first prototypes of movable close-spaced office workstations. Herman Miller Inc introduced the Action Office 1 in 1964 but by 1968 had added vision blocking panels to it creating the Action Office System, and the first Cubicle.

At the time of that discovery there was no known problem that could cause the mental breaks anywhere other than the working conditions in a business office. The designers, engineers, and psychologists thought they had created the problem for the first time and that it only produced a harmless period of confusion and pseudo-psychotic behavior. If you search history you can find other times and locations where the sudden mental events happened. Cabin Fever, a sudden berserk attack when fur trappers attempted to winter-over in too-small cabins, disappeared after the 1830's. The depression and mental breaks began to happen on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Admiral Byrd took only two coffins, but twelve straightjackets on his expeditions.
The Belgian Polar Expedition of 1898 experienced the problem when the entire crew began to go insane. The Belgica was trapped in polar ice for over a year. Only Dr Cook, ship's doctor, was unaffected. He remained active because of his duties to treat the crew. Only one man became permanently insane. The crew recovered when they began working outside to chop the ship out of the ice.

All humans have a vision driven warning system that will break your concentration with a startle if something approaches too close from behind. If you have ever been startled when someone stepped up beside you from behind that is the warning system. Remember how fast that happened. You startle before you know what the movement is. That is because Subliminal Sight detects only movement and position. You identify the source of movement when you turn and look.
To prevent repeating startles when movement repeats we have the ability to ignore detected movement we know to be harmless. The problem is that ignoring the movement does not turn the system off. The subliminal operation of the system prevents you being aware the brain system is still being triggered by repeating threat-movement. You brain still reacts and attempts to force a startle and vision reflex each time new movement is subliminally detected. Outside the United States this is named Subliminal Distraction. Here visual subliminal distraction is not recognized. The term is used to explain audio input subliminally perceived when you dissociate slightly to be able to concentrate to perform knowledge work, become lost in thought, or daydream. It is generally accepted that that the subliminal distraction of sounds is a fatiguing factor in business offices.
There are several possible explanation of why the mental break happens. The constant subliminal appreciation of threat eventually colors thought and reason creating paranoia and fear.
Your brain receives neural impulses from sensor cells. Those neural signals are hard-wired to brain areas that evaluate them then assemble the total input into your consciousness and reality.
A single startle and reflex happens suddenly and is not recognized as input. When you create a situation so that movement is constantly detected your brain eventually attempts to understand and use the repeating input. The brain grows new synapses and modifies old ones to create memory. In the effort to use the subliminal unaccustomed signals it makes mistakes and incorrect associations. When enough of these exist your brain cannot function; you have a dissociative mental break.
If the input stops the new incorrect connections dissolve from disuse. Qi Gong, and Kundalini Yoga users have these sudden mental breaks when too many sessions are performed in a compact time frame. The victim usually recovers without harm. Hospital patients who spend more that five days in an ICU bed have similar mental breaks. Most recover when they leave the ICU.

The too-many people living in too-small single-room space problem causes mental events around the world. Each ethnic group has a different name and explanation of what the mental event is. in fact, their reactions are so different that they are thought to be separate illnesses. Volumes have been written, psychobabble, to explain how different culture and experience create the metal events. They have been included as Culture Bound Syndromes in the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness,' DSM, for the first time. To understand them this site uses Jumping Diseases, or 'startle matching behavior,' to model an explanation of them. Jumping Frenchmen of Maine was the first of these to be recognized in the 1880's. The syndrome is so strange that it cannot be mistaken for anything else. Upon a startle the victim will perform any action commanded to them even it is harmful to themselves or others. They often repeat their own last words or the last words of those speaking to them. That behavior is usually only seen in catatonic schizophrenia.

Sudden violence such as may have happened in the Winkler shooting began to be recorded in the stories of Cabin Fever in the 1830's. Fur trappers had to over-winter to get the best pelts. When two men attempted to live in a small single-room cabin they were often snowed in for weeks. If one worked on something requiring concentration he could subliminally detect movement from the cabin-mate. When a threshold of exposure was reached the metal break happened.
Although it is disappearing in primitive societies, the same sudden violence still happens today. It is called Amok in Malaysia, iich'aa among the Navaho, and Going Postal in the United States. All of these are included as Culture Bound Syndromes. Cabin Fever is not included in current CBS's.
The Post Office does not provide Cubicle Level Protection where it is needed. Postal shooters are often mail sorters. That job requires full mental investment to type in zip codes to allow machine sorting. The Goleta shooter was a mail sorter who was fired when she began acting strangely. She demonstrated mental illness until she returned to Goleta this spring.
Today the victim of exposure to Subliminal Distraction who commits violence may give an apparently reasonable explanation or confession. Only investigation will reveal that the story given is delusional.
When Mary Shotwell Little and Diane Shields disappeared in Atlanta they both had stories that proved to be untrue. Shields claimed to be working in secret on an important Police matter. There was nothing happening with any police authority at the time. She would disappear for hours with no explanation. Little began to believe a story involving some problem at the bank. It is unknown who she contacted but someone helped her set up an abduction scene by smearing blood inside her car. She was seen in the company of two men at two service stations in Charlotte and Raleigh the same day the car was discovered. She was reported covered in blood when she presented her credit card to pay for gas. The two stops were fourteen hours apart even though the drive between the two cities is only three hours. The events just didn't add up. (While discussing this disappearance with a cold case officer I learned that the Atlanta Police Department had a problem with the phenomenon and switched to cubicles. They had never connected their office problem with the disappearance.)

The rare occurrence of the
injury establishes that is difficult to create enough exposure to cause an
injury. But when it does happen the consequences are serious, possibly fatal.
Our personal experience
was intermittent human traffic during eight-hour workdays for thirty calendar
days.
If you have a tower CPU mount
it under your desk. That's the way they position it in a cubicle. The hard drive
busy light is about the height of your low peripheral vision if you put the
tower on the desk. Desktop reading of text or writing notes beside the keyboard
on the side of the monitor away from the tower makes the blinking hard drive
busy light appear to approach from behind when you turn to view the screen
again.
If you have a computer work
station/desk in which you turn ninety degrees to write or do other non computer
work, turn off the monitor when you turn aside. Remove screen savers in this
instance. The movement, animation for example, in your screensaver,
two-dimensional movement, might well be detected by your peripheral vision at
close range. Alternately cover the monitor screen.
All home, apartment, or
dorm computer workstations are in unprotected workspace.
To change that put the computer in a quiet room with no possible movement. If
that is not possible in a dorm or apartment position the computer so that your
peripheral vision can see only stationary walls as you use the computer in a
busy room. In Cubicles and 'Systems Furniture' these protective features are
achieved with peripheral vision blocking panels and corner seating positions. It
is called 'Cubicle Level Protection.'
If you use computer or CD-ROM
games for many hours day after day, the game playing position should follow the
same rules as the computer workstation. Battery operated games will not run long
enough on a single rechargeable battery to cause a risk for SPVP.
Although a laptop does not
have a visible blinking light in peripheral vision the same rules apply to your
work position. There should not be human traffic moving to you from
behind. There should be nothing behind you, which could enter your subliminal
peripheral vision field as you turn your head while working at the laptop and be
mistaken for threat movement.
Only movement coming from
behind you into your Subliminal Peripheral Vision can cause a peripheral vision
reflex. If the movement source approaches you from ahead then enters your
Subliminal Peripheral Vision from conscious sight there can be no peripheral
vision reflex.
Repeated for Emphasis:
A single session or rare
sessions will not cause this problem.
It is the same day after day
long hours of play or computer use with detectable movement in ‘Subliminal
Peripheral Vision,’ which would form the basis of a risk for SPVP injury.
The brain’s detection system only evaluates movement. There is little recognition of the nature of the object in peripheral vision. If you have several hours exposure from human traffic at the library, while reading at an open table or seated in a reading room chair, followed by long hours watching TV with a critically misplaced ceiling fan sweeping detectable shadows around the room, the combination of those two behaviors might cause the problem. The suggestion is that either activity alone would not consume enough exposure time even if the critical movement is present.
