I discovered the phenomenon of sudden unexplained disappearances of college students when I began to investigate Subliminal Distraction.
After more than six years of investigation I still cannot determine in the first few hours of a disappearance if it is a criminal act, accident, suicide, or Dissociative Fugue.
This page suggests that a simple problem is the cause of these unresolved mysterious events.
When it was discovered in the 1960's designers and engineers did not try to evaluate who might be effected. They designed a product to prevent the exposure that caused mental breakdowns from Subliminal Distraction.
The cubicle was designed to deal with the vision startle reflex to prevent those mental events after 1968.
That solution has worked so well for forty years that the phenomenon is unknown by the public.
Although Subliminal Distraction is explained in college psychology under psychophysics, no school is aware of the potential risk it allows.
Cubicle Level Protection is not used in locations where it is needed nor are students warned about it.
A library carrel is an example of full Cubicle Level Protection.
Long hours of study or computer use requires full mental investment to a level of slight dissociation. That establishes a single workstation just like the 1960 office situation. If there is movement in peripheral vision Subliminal Distraction exposure is possible.

This page and the College Suicides page are used to store information.
In that sense this is a record of an ongoing investigation.
The purpose of this page is to assemble the stories of missing students to illustrate the common elements between them.
The theory being advanced is that some of the missing students were victims of Dissociative Fugue caused by failure to provide Cubicle Level Protection. There are two possibilities. They would have incorrectly installed their dorm or apartment computer so that the CPU and the blinking hard drive busy light was on top of the desk rather than correctly placed under the desk. Any detectable repeating movement in the room would cause repeating peripheral vision reflexes. A combination of stimulation at several places on campus is also possible. This would include an incorrectly designed dorm room for two students. Computer labs where the students are seated side-by-side without a privacy screen between them is another likely place of exposure.
It is not possible to simply read news accounts of missing students and confirm SPVP involvement. A smoking gun is needed. The defective workstation or source of stimulation must be found.
What are other factors?
Blinking lights on the Computer CPU may be mistaken for threat movement to cause a Peripheral Vision Reflex.
Note: HP and Compaq have removed the bright blinking hard drive busy light from their computer CPU cases. The light is now available only if you look directly into a pencil eraser size clear plastic button. It is no longer detectable in normal use. Wireless note book cards are still a source of blinking lights in laptops. 02/07/09 04:14 PM -0600

Aubrey Seiler is not missing but her behavior indicated she is a victim. News reports indicate her lap top
computer supplied
information in the case. Court TV aired this story on June 19th with footage of
the news accounts contemporaneous to the event. There still is no explanation
for the event or why she did it.
Court TV aired a program about this incident again tonight April 1st, 2007. There was no mention of Subliminal Distraction or how she may have arrived at the decision to "fake" her abduction. What you should remember is that she didn't want to leave the park because she said her abductor would kill her. Even though she was taped buying a knife and other instruments to carry out the event she may have been in a delusional state while this happened. To the sane well balanced observer this doesn't make sense. It won't make sense it's psychotic. Victims of exposure from Subliminal Distraction are unaware there has been any outside influence. They see the events as their own decisions. Mary Shotwell Little is still missing from Lenox square in Atlanta, 1965. Police believed she staged the disappearance because of the small amount of blood smeared in her car. In an interview after Jennifer Wilbanks took her cross country trip she told Barbara Walters that she even considered suicide. She was unaware of the possibility that moving in with her fiancée created the "special conditions" for exposure from Subliminal Distraction. Jennifer Wilbanks page.
These people have different levels of amnesia both during the event and after it.
Within the time period of the full incident she would have recovered from exposure to Subliminal Distraction. Audrey doesn't know what happened to her. Her computer showed she had accessed her boyfriend's email account. She discovered he had exchanged emails with another girl. She was shown to purchase medicines and things to facilitate the campout. She had checked the weather forecast for the upcoming week with her computer. ICU Psychosis
She was diagnosed to have been clinically depressed. If you are a frequent reader of this site you are aware that exposure to Subliminal Distraction can cause depression. Astronauts & Insanity
She was reported missing but located living in a campsite in a nearby park. Limited comments stated that she believed that she was not free to leave the campsite. There had been a previous incident which she thought was an attack . It might have been a seizure and fall. I would be interested in a history of her computer use. She was reported to have a laptop. Did she have a modem card with a blinking light? Read the check list above. Was she working on a large project using the laptop? Remember that exposure is cumulative. A history of her activity, where she read textbooks, plus where and for how long she used her computer, are of interest. It might help you to read Personal Experiences. None of these cases will be identical. That is the reason police and college administrations cannot see the connection between them.
The problem is that Aubrey Seiler is susceptible to the phenomenon and does not know that it exists. If she returns to the computer use that caused this episode the next episode could be a suicide.
UP DATE: Fox News reported that Seiler has accepted a sentencing deal for probation and partial reimbursement of over $90,000, $9,000.
When you see the footage of that Fox Segment it is impossible to believe she was in a normal mental state. When she was approached in the park she told police the abductor was there with a gun. The description given of her in that situation was that she was frantic.

Ron Tammen Miami University, Ohio, April 9, 1953
Ron Tammen was seen by the hall manager about eight o'clock when he exchanged sheets for his bed. By ten o'clock when his roommate returned he was gone. His psychology book was left open on the study desk. Later, when authorities began to look for him, they found he had approached a house in a confused state, unable to remember his name, and asked for directions to a nonexistent bus station. He was wearing a light blanket jacket. It was too thin for the cold that night. There was snow on the ground.
This is a case where the psychology department got it right. They diagnosed it to be a "Case of Amnesia." The reason they knew what had happened is that there were other students there who had disappeared, recovered, and returned. Those students wrote letters to Tammen's family believing that he too would return.
He is still missing and it has been over fifty years.
The adobe files linked below are pictures of newspaper clippings from the period. Some are of poor quality but the desk and room are shown in separate photos. While not perfect this is almost the smoking gun to establish the phenomenon is causing student disappearances.
The source of stimulation for Tammen would have been his roommate moving in the room while he studied. This would have happened over weeks. There may have been other sources on campus. Interviewing those who had previously disappeared and finding what they did on campus would show what other sources existed. That is not possible after fifty years.
The description of the mental event is Dissociative Fugue but they called it a case of Amnesia.
Why is this case significant?
Tammen's position as residence manager speaks to the University's evaluation of his abilities. There is no history of mental problems. There was some source of exposure on the campus because other students had dissociative events. This is the first case I have found where all the elements are pictured in newspaper reports. The room pictured in the adobe file seems too small to have been Tammen's room but other articles on-line actually give the room number.
Nothing we find on-line will be perfect proof. Even today experts and college administrations are searching for the cause of sudden unexplained suicides and student disappearances. Because police and news reporters are unaware of the phenomenon it is random-chance-accident that they observe and report information to reveal the cause of a disappearance or suicide. News in the Tammen case: Bones from a body discovered in Northern Georgia in July 1953 are being DNA tested to determine if the body was Tammen. The unidentified body, discovered three months after Tammen disappeared from Miami of Ohio, had been shot in the chest. There were no methods of communication back in 53. Investigators attempting to resolve the old murder case discovered the description of the body was close to a description of Tammen. (I will set up a Google Alert for this story.)
Middlebury College, Vermont
Lynne Schulze
On December 10, 1971 Lynne Schulze was walking to class with friends at Middlebury College in Vermont. She told them that she had left her pencil in the dorm and went back for it. She vanished.. All her possessions were found in the dorm room. Letters she sent home had no clue to a problem but friends said she had been feeling homesick. Later there were sightings of her hitchhiking. One man claimed to have given a ride to someone with her description but there were others in distant locations with similar stories of sightings. Both parents died but not before leaving DNA samples to identify her if she is found.
These stories continue to appear in the news. This disappearance is thirty-five years old.

Second disappearance from Middlebury College
Nick Garza -- Deceased
The Body of Nick Garza has been found. A wallet found on the body identified
him. He was found among sunken timber in Otter Creek.
Middlebury College, February 5, 2008, Nick Garza was last seen leaving a party
in a friend's dorm, Stewart Hall, near 11:30 PM. He was believed to be returning
to his dorm, Allen Hall. Searches for him have involved student volunteers
probing snow banks with poles. The belief was that he somehow lost his way
walking across campus. He was wearing light tennis shoes and his winter jacket
was found in his room.
An early suggestion was that he had gone to a cabin in New Hampshire with
friends.
The reported recovery of a body behind a high school near campus on April 18th
on a forum website now appears to have been a hoax. WCAX TV has a story dated
April 26 about a Saturday search by volunteers. Pictures show that snow is no
longer a problem. They are searching for clues to the disappearance if there is
no sign of Garza.

Jackson Chua has been missing seven years. He disappeared the day before he was to begin exams at Temasek Polytechnic in Tampines. He was a third-year engineering student. The news site has pictures of his room but not of the computer setup.
Jackson left home to explore a new bus route but never returned. He had his cell phone and pager with him. The family kept the pager account active and page him several times a day after seven years.

Canada
Aju Iroga, a 25 year old McMaster University engineering student, disappeared from an A&M Reforestation tree planting site, Crocker Lake, near White River Ontario. He was last seen walking up a logging road at 3:45 PM May 15, 2006. Although a supervisor said he quit the job over an argument about the incorrect positioning of recent tree plantings he left his drivers license, Nigerian and Canadian Passports, social insurance card, and phone card. A second year worker, he must have known how to position the plantings. He was told to wait for the company bus into White River 70 kilometers away on highway 17. Witnesses sighted him at least ten times waiting at the bus stop that day. He waved to some of them. He was a runner and regularly sprinted 30 kilometers for exercise in the morning before work.
One theory is that he ran 66 kilometers to the Trans Canadian Highway and hitched a ride. Supervisors drove local roads honking the horn searching for him. A week long search by the Ontario Provincial Police involved three helicopters. His parents are insisting the investigation be reopened now, 2008.
Think about that situation. He sat all day by the road with his possessions back in the camp before walking up the logging road in the afternoon.

Kwantlene college Surrey British Columbia
Sahil Sharma is a 20 year old student who disappeared Thursday November 13th, 2008. He attended classes until 6 pm and was to have taken a bus home for an arrival time of 7:30. He never got there.
News accounts cite 545 cases of disappearances between 2000 and 2004. These cases are believed to be different although many are young males. Police list half the number as "unknown cause." British Columbia has a high number of cases compared to the rest of Canada. With triple the population of BC Ontario has 1500 cases and BC has 2500 for the same time period since 1950.
Sahil Sharma, 20, failed to return to his Surrey home after classes at Kwantlen university on Nov. 13, 2008.
Kellen McElwee, 25, of Burnaby, last seen having dinner at the Keg in Langley on March 19, 2008. His car was found abandoned a few days later.
Derek Kelly, 32, of Langley, last seen at Bridge Lake on Jan. 1, 2008, after celebrating the new year with acquaintances.
Bryan Braumberger, 18, of Burnaby, last seen in Coquitlam on June 1, 2007.

Missing Updates:
There have been developments in the case of the four closely spaced student disappearances. Two have been found dead. Authorities claim a confession in the disappearance of Erika Dalquist. They cannot find a body using the information obtained. Update: May 18, 2004 3:18 AM-- Fox News -- Erika Dalquist's body was discovered buried on property owned by relatives of the main suspect in her disappearance. The suspect had miss-directed police to look in a quarry lake.
One of the four is still missing, Joshua Guimond.

We are beginning to receive site hits on search string "Josh Guimond Found." No other information is available.
This might be a false alarm.
The mystery has been solved there was an article in which Guimond's father said that although Josh had NOT been found he believed his son was still alive. 'Google Alerts' reported the phrase without the NOT.
Missing Students
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Christine Walters
I had opened a file for Christine Walters months ago but there was no evidence that she was a Subliminal Distraction victim at that time. A recent page from 'The Pointer' revealed that she had been taken in to custody after appearing confused, nude, with scratches from briars, on a rural door step. After evaluation she was released. She said she did not know what happened to cause her bizarre behavior. She immediately vanished.
Christine Walters is 23 years old, has blondish-red hair and blue eyes. She is 5’4” and approximately 100 pounds. She had been visiting a friend in Portland, Oregon when she decided to extend her stay and head south to Eureka, California. She was last seen on November 14, 2008 when she left for a walk through the woods. Her personal effects including a borrowed black backpack were left in a restaurant. She had done that before.

Matthew Wilson -- Recovered
Wilson was arrested when campus police found him using a laptop in an unused Berkeley, California classroom. He was released without charges and his mother escorted him back home.

There is evidence that Wilson, a straight A computer science major, withdrew $400 from his account on December 14, 2007, went back and took out another $100, then returned to his room. He made purchases which included charcoal then disappeared. He was last seen by his roommate at noon on the 15th. During this activity there is no indication he was under duress.
His car has been found in
Berkeley California. Books about changing identities and living cheaply in the
San Francisco area were found in the car. The books had his fingerprints.
One of his friends emailed me after I left a message on a forum dedicated to
finding him. He had a habit of playing table top games, not video games, three
nights each week. I have been unable to interview anyone else about these games.
There have been reports from China that Mahjong players have mental events
believed to be seizures. Wilson's game playing sessions may have been an
additional source of Subliminal Distraction exposure. All that is necessary is
to use full mental investment to a level of light dissociation, which will
engage the subliminal brain system that detects movement in peripheral vision.
For that to happen he would have to pick a seating position so that others walked by as he planned game moves. His other exposure opportunities would peak near exams when there is intense study. There have been articles about suicides at MIT and NYU that show that connection for school year time period. But stress is blamed not Subliminal Distraction.

Current news stories are that several people have reported sighting someone matching Matthew's description walking along a road. His mother has traveled to Berkeley to help look for him. The discussion is that they don't understand why he would attempt to change identities without changing his hair color and length. His mother said she didn't understand why he would leave his "laptop" when he drove away.

Amy Scott and Daniel Querzoli -- Both Recovered
One of the strangest current disappearances involves Amy Scott and her boy friend Daniel Querzoli. Feb 14 the two borrowed a friend's car for a one hour trip even though both had their own cars. Cell phones, wallet, and credit cards were left behind. The only communication was that they left because they were in danger.
The two became the subject of media and police attention from family efforts to
find them.
Days later Scott called a friend. She joined her parents in New York then
returned to the family home in New Jersey. Her parents stopped communicating
with media and police once they had recovered her.
Querzoli was arrested driving a stolen car in Pennsylvania. The car they had
borrowed from a friend was found parked.
Some of Scott's roommates later moved out of shared apartments when Scott said
they were still in danger even though the danger was not specified.
If this is a case of Subliminal Distraction exposure causing fear and paranoia
it is certainly unique.

Camille Cleverly -- Deceased
Returning early from missionary duty in Germany 22 year old BYU student Cleverly was reported ill by a relative. She was seen riding her bike near the missionary training center between 5 & 6 PM on Thursday the 30th. She used her debit card to purchase a snack on Friday. Her mother reported her missing on Saturday. Extensive searched have not located her. The bike, her wallet and keys were all she took with her.
Cable news programs are reporting a bike found padlocked. Two individuals cut off the padlock but turned it in when they realized who it might belong to.
Cleverly's body was recovered near Bridal Veil Falls. She was apparently the victim of a fall.
Oklahoma City Community College
Mayuko "Mayu" Kawase -- Deceased
Parents of Mayuko Kawase in Japan are sending DNA samples to determine if bones found by Boy Scouts at Camp Kickapoo are those of then 21 year-old Kawase. She disappeared in August of 2001 from south Oklahoma City. Camp Kickapoo is in south Oklahoma City.
The AP is reporting that the remains found are those of Kawase. August 16, 2007.
Mississippi Valley State University
Louis Doug Scott Jr. -- Deceased
On-line sites report that Scott was killed when his car left the road and hit a tree before turning upside down in Deer Creek off highway 61. The car submerged in 14/16 foot deep water. It could not be seen from the air or by driving on the road. Fishermen found it.
Since he had been to a nightclub the suspicion is that he lost control of the car due to drinking.
Afghanistan veteran and sophomore in criminal justice "Doug" Scott disappeared April 22, while driving back from a night out in Greenville with his roommate and friends. They were traveling in two cars. He was seen about 2:30 am parked in a Conoco Gas Station on US 82. The second car blinked their lights when they passed him; saw him blink his lights back; then they returned to school. He had a cell phone conversation with the second car that he intended to visit a girl friend in Leland then return home rather than school because of jury duty the next Monday. His family reported him missing when he failed to appear for jury duty. The car has not been found and there is no activity on credit cards or cell phone. The last cell phone records are that he spoke to someone in Leland about 3:00 am.

Mark Randall Davis
On the night of Jan 14, Davis ate with family at the Olive Garden in Tyler, then accompanied them to a Wal-Mart to buy a jacket to wear at school. They all went to bed and in the morning he had left. He took his mountain bike but left his passport, wallet, and cell phone. He wrote a note on a computer in which he said the family would not find him. He had no drug or mental health issues and maintained a 3.7 grade point average. His total hours transferred and earned at A&M qualified him as a senior.
He lived in a student suite situation with his own bedroom but shared a kitchen and common living area with three additional students. They are reported to have kept different hours and rarely met.
The family noted he was withdrawn and despondent since the Christmas Holidays.

Purdue
Wade Steffey -- Deceased
The body of Wade Steffey has been found. He had fallen into a high voltage transformer in a utility room for Owen Hall, a dormitory at Purdue. How and why he entered the room is still under investigation. Steffey did not have a pass key to Owen Hall. Speculation is that he tried several doors before gaining access to the utility room from the outside. Although workers had searched there previously they would have had to cut power to the dorm to be able to go far enough into the room to find him.
The last information available on-line is dated Jan 29. Nineteen year-old Steffey left a Phi Kappa Theta fraternity party Friday night but didn't appear intoxicated, phoned a girl on campus, withdrew fifty dollars from an atm at 1 AM, and disappeared. He was a straight A student on a Fulbright Scholarship in Aviation Technology. FBI, Purdue and the Indiana State Police are involved in the search. His roommate returned from a weekend trip home and discovered none of his possessions were missing.
In a story from The Exponent his roommate mentions he was a video game player. In fact he was playing the game when his roommate left to go home.

Jason Shaughnessy -- Recovered
Shaughnessy was last seen by his roommate. He got dressed, grabbed his laptop and left. He was to graduate on Saturday (20th?) but disappeared on the 17th. An administration of justice major he works at a law firm. His car, a 2001 black Ford Mustang convertible is also missing. The license number is California, 4UDC752.

Robert Hornbeck -- Deceased
Maintenance workers have found Robert Hornbeck's body in an air conditioning duct in a Savannah hotel. (7:00 AM Saturday April 29, CNN news report.) Cause of death was not stated. His father has confirmed that the body is Robert Hornbeck.

Hornbeck had been back from Iraq since January. He traveled to Savannah from Ft Benning Ga to help move his grandfather into a nursing home. He, a friend, his father, and uncle had played pool earlier Saturday night. He and Jeremy Stone remained at the hotel bar after his father and uncle left. About 3 am Stone used Robert's cell phone to call Eric Hornbeck for a ride home. Jeremy and Robert were too drunk to drive.
Jeremy and Robert were in the bar when Jeremy saw Robert's uncle, Kirk, arrive. He left the bar to meet Kirk. Jeremy was away from Robert less than a minute. When they returned Robert was gone. Eric called Robert on his cell phone and Robert said, "I'm on the stairs." The call abruptly ended. There has been no contact with Robert Since.
Dogs tracked his scent into the hotel garage. A locked door was found. It was a small closet. They speculated that he might have slept there Sunday Morning. Police have received several sightings within a ten minute period. All the descriptions, of a man on the Interstate, were the same and could have been Robert. Police arrived within fifteen minutes but the man was gone.
Hornbeck was scheduled to end his Army service with a discharge on April 30th. He had planned a wedding in July and would have started school soon. He was a psychology major.
PTSD is being suggested as the reason for the disappearance.

Brian Shaffer
It has been a year and Brian is still missing with no clue as to why he disappeared, April 9th, 2007.
While out celebrating on April 1st, Brian Shaffer was last seen talking to two women. One minute he was there the next he was gone. Sgt. John Hurst said both women were located and they had no information. Hurst also explained why almost one hundred security cameras in the area failed to show Shaffer leaving. Some of the cameras were being manually controlled and there are dead spots in the coverage. A homeless man reported seeing Shaffer at a store but the store's camera tapes eliminated that possibility. There is no factor in Shaffer's life that explains why he is missing.
He had planned a trip to Miami with his girl friend, Alexis Waggoner, on Aril 4th, and left comments on a her blog.
I located her email address through her blog. She did not reply to a communication. The two studied together in his apartment. If that means they used the same room it would have been a source of Subliminal Distraction. A few questions to her would establish if that did happen.

Hiroshi Hayashi
A new student disappearance at Ohio State is being treated as a hoax. Hiroshi Hayashi told his mother he would be home by dinner. His car was found at a west campus parking lot. He didn't appear at a club meeting over the weekend. The Lantern, Ohio State student newspaper reported he is a junior in pre-computer and information science.
He has been found alive in Tennessee. The story he told police was that he had been abducted and escaped. A cut on his neck was explained as a hiking accident but might have been a suicide attempt. Police in Athens arrested him for filing a false report ten jailed him placing him on a suicide watch.
His course of study would make him a heavy computer user.

WCBS News Radio 880 is reporting that a body has been found in a Pennsylvania landfill.
"New Jersey state police Capt. Al Della Fave said there had been a ``significant development'' but would not disclose any further information. Tullytown Patrolman John Finby said the remains of the white male were found at 1:45 p.m."
The question still remains, why did he go down the garbage chute in the middle of the night?

Blood identified as being from John Fiocco was found inside and around a dumpster at the bottom of a trash chute at his dormitory. Authorities are searching landfills in Pennsylvania using backhoes and then rakes and hand searches for his body. He had been seen in the dorm, 3am, at the The College of New Jersey before he went missing. The theory is that he went down the trash chute early in the morning of March 25, but cameras did not detect blood inside the chute. Waste Management used their Global Positioning System to locate the two sites that would hold the March 27 trash pickup from Fiocco's dorm. Both possible locations are one acre and about twenty feet deep.
A local reporter interviewed for cable news programs described the dumpster as having a "plunger" that forces trash into the removable box. The chute goes down into that box located inside the dorm.

Daniel Compton -- Deceased
Even before he was found Compton's family requested that nothing be released about him. Since his death they requested that the police not reveal any details of the events surrounding his death. Newspaper reports say he was found in his car, a suicide. He was the second Georgia Tech student to disappear and be found dead. Joseph Morse (below) disappeared in 2000. (Morse died in Miami the day after he disappeared from Georgia Tech but was not located for four years.) News stories at the time in Atlanta showed he had several roommates.
SF State
Wallace Richard
Richards was a former student scheduled to re-enroll at SF State. He had been returning to the school and hanging out with friends at the same bench near the quad. A friend gave him her gold Mercedes, November 10, so he could have the oil changed. Sabrina Ford, his girl friend, called him once shortly after he left with the car around 11am. When he failed to return police would not activate the LoJack on the car for a week because the friend had given him the keys. The car was found parked on the street in San Lorenzo.
Richards' cell phone records show his last attempted call was to a friend Joshua Gray at 10:44am the morning he disappeared. This conflicts with other accounts that say his last call was to his girlfriend around noon on the same day. He didn't pick up when she returned the call.

Joshua C. Guimond (Gee-moe) November 9, 2002 He was political science major. Near midnight, he walked from party at Metten Court in the north of the campus to his room three minutes away in St. Maur House, St John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota. He is reported to have been too lightly dressed for the weather at that time of year. He did not have his glasses. His car was left behind.
A forum thread set up by his best friend and roommate includes information that there was a controlled deer hunt in the wooded area near the college. No one reported finding anything. There is also a swampy area nearby. A dive and recovery team searched the area lakes. A map of the college shows he would have walked around one lake to get back to his dorm.
He is now the only remaining student of the four missing from the fall of 2002.

Madison Area Technical College
Amos Mortier disappeared from Fitchburg Wisconsin, November 8, 2004 leaving his apartment unlocked, his dog wandering in the neighborhood, and his favorite music record spinning on the turntable. After that disappearance nurses at a Tennessee music event recognized him from a flier. They had treated him at the music festival. He was 27 when he disappeared, worked as an electrician, made and sold jewelry, and had sound equipment used when he worked as a DJ. He was a student at Madison Area Technical College. One missing person's site mentions he paid $1500 each month to rent a space for his business, ''Coat of Mani Colors.''
The local police believe, because drugs were involved, that he was murdered and discounted the sighting. But there is no information in the on-line reports that any evidence of murder has been found.

Scott Michael Javins was last seen driving away from a party at a friends house, 22nd Street and First Avenue, in Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 24, 2002., 2 am. He had phoned his mother and said he was headed home. His car, a two door Honda Civic hatchback, is also missing. The car had a temporary tag #F-269684 and the VIN # is SHHEP335324302685.There were disputes as to how much money he had when he vanished. One account said about fifty dollars but another believed he might have had three hundred dollars. The family published two phone numbers (812) 249-9202 or (812) 466-3459.
News and TV stories say that the family began to donate the $40,000 fund gathered for information on his disappearance to charities in 2003.

Ylva Hagner Oct. 14, 1996 A forty-two year old woman from Palo Alto, disappeared from her Ixos Software office while working late . Her car was found three days later parked on the street in San Carlos. Statements in news reports say that her desk looked as if she had just stepped away for a moment and expected to return. There were several reports of sightings in the area. Some of the sightings were run down by police and the sighted woman located. It was not her. Ylva Hagner was a grad student. This information is gathered from news reports still posted on line. She was included on my Mysterious Disappearances page for another reason; I did not know at the time she was a student. An updated family page cites a problem with a college professor. The professor had a theory that she was among the homeless and street people and apparently spent some time working to find her. The family suspects he is responsible for her disappearance. She has a fair complexion and bright red hair. It was past shoulder length at the time.

After a memorial service a name was given in a newspaper article. There was enough descriptive information that I was able to contact the person. He had worked with Ylva at Ixos Software. He confirms that contrary to published information the software company did not use cubicles. Ylva sat at a desk in a room with perhaps forty feet of visible office space. This does not absolutely prove she was a Subliminal Distraction victim but it adds to the possibility.
Kristen Modafferi June 23, 1997 This is an interesting case in that there is evidence that she has been sighted in Nicaragua. The report was that she was in an altered mental state. I exchanged emails with one of the people working to find her. A current email revealed that the sighting was never verified. The person could not furnish any information that would identify the girl as Kristen.
Kristen disappeared from the San Francisco Bay area . She was a full time student at North Carolina State, Raleigh. There were false leads in the first days of the investigation. Her clothes and personal items were left behind. A $400 paycheck was never picked up. Tracking dogs followed her scent to a B.A.R.T. station, and the Geary St. bus stop. Her scent was also found near Sutro Park Beach. The impression was that she just walked away while exploring the city. (Note: Now this story parallels the story of Ahmad Arain who disappeared within six miles of his destination. He has been found see below.)

Suzanne Lyall March 2 1998 A 19 year-old University at Albany sophomore, she was last seen getting off a bus within 200 yards of her dorm room . She hasn't been seen since. March 24, 1998 I discounted this story in the beginning because she disappeared from a cruise ship .But a time line supplied by her mother in a TV interview said she was seen in the suite between 5:45am and 5:30am, seen with a crew member at 5:45am, and the ship was docked at 6:00am. A recent search of her web sites shows her seated at a computer in what appears to be a dorm room. The photo does not include the CPU placement. She graduated with a degree in physical education and was a lifeguard. The FBI missing persons site reports she had a job with a computer company which would have begun after the vacation trip. A relative had hired her. She has identifying tattoos.

We are receiving hits on search strings for Amy. One sighting was by an engineer who said he spoke with her on the beach the morning after the disappearance. This site is again receiving many hits overnight on a search string, "Amy Bradley sightings." MSNBC is reporting that a picture has surfaced of a woman resembling Amy in a brothel in the Caribbean. The story said there were several pictures but her parents did not supply a positive identification when shown the pictures on the Dr Phil Show.
"...Amy's parents have looked at the photo, shown on "Dr. Phil," and other photos of this same woman and believe she bears a strong resemblance to Amy. "
Her mother pointed to facial markings, teeth, and cheek bones as similarities.

Unsolved Mysteries has a segment on Amy Bradley. It ran on Lifetime in the last few days. Although this is a very old rerun of the cancelled program it contained information I had not heard before. Her brother said she had not been feeling well. She blamed it on the motion of the cruise ship. She changed clothes when she left the room. She took only her lighter and cigarettes.

Michael Negrete December 10, 1999 He attended a party at UCLA the night of Dec 10, at Dykstra Hall, played an on-line game with a friend then left the dorm and has not been seen since. One picture published in The Daily Bruin shows his empty room and desk. In that empty room picture there is something in the book case behind his chair. It might be his roommate's computer CPU. Police had removed his computer to look for contacts. A second photo I viewed on-line shows him at the computer but another student is sitting blocking the view of the desktop. In that picture the shelf is in view but there is nothing on that bottom shelf. Another account in the Daily Forty-Niner mentions that his wallet, shoes and jacket were left behind. He may have been wearing a pair of light canvas shoes. Dogs tracked his scent to a bus stop two blocks away. He was a trumpet player and music student at UCLA with his major undeclared. He had family in Southern California and Mexico but his mother said he would not go there. The family had a reward of $100,000 offered for information leading to his return.
A cached page revealed that the trail to the bus stop followed a zig-zag path through the campus before ending at the bus stop. The party is cited as being held in the dorm. The student he played the game with was in another room on campus.

When I saw the picture in the bottom right of the second linked page below it occurred to me that there were no protective elements for the workstation in his dorm room. If he sat at the computer as others moved around the room that would have provided stimulus in Subliminal Peripheral Vision to cause the mental break.
Structural features of Dykstra Hall protrude into dorm rooms. These dictate how a study desk will be placed in the room. When the desk is placed so the student's back is to the length of the room there is partial Cubicle Level Protection. When the desk is placed in line with the bed so the student's side faces the length of the room, the student can subliminally detect any movement in the room.

Ryan Katcher -- Deceased
A pickup has been pulled from fifty feet of water in a state park pond containing the body of Ryan Katcher. Katcher disappeared in November 5, 2000. Emergency workers practicing with new equipment found the truck in the Kickapoo State Park. Emails to family were never answered and he was not listed on this page previously. There was little information other than he disappeared after being dropped off at his home from a party. At the time his truck was parked in the home drive.
I confirmed that my email to his family was received. In fact it was forwarded by the webmaster of a site open at the time. There is no information on what his living arrangements were, what type computer he used or any activities he pursued that might have caused exposure to Subliminal Distraction. After five years there is little that can be determined unless there is some physical injury that would not be accounted for by the truck running into the water. It is possible that something happened and that his death is a murder. Information and any additional links will be posted as they are found.

Joseph Morse -- Deceased
May 6th, 2000 A freshman mechanical engineering student, he walked away as he was packing to go home from Georgia Tech. It was the morning of finals according to one source. He was observed withdrawing cash from an ATM and has not been seen since. A posting on a local bulletin board site states that Morse left all his belongings in his dorm room. An article in the alumni magazine describes a decline in his class attendance after spring break and his failure to take finals. Stories published say that he walked to the shower, spoke with friends along the way, may have left a wet towel in the shower and has not been seen since. He spoke of registering for summer classes and a Co-Op job. After he disappeared the family discovered he had not registered for summer classes. The Georgia Tech press release cites his 3.4 GPA and gives Cincinnati as his home. He did wear glasses but the reason is unknown. There is no mention of a dorm computer. (FBI missing persons site and Ga. Tech Police Department site.) There is no personal page posted by friends or family.
July 29,2004 Today I found one comment on a Technique archived page that Joe Morse played Playstation Football with friends in the dorm. That is one element to establish that he may be a Dissociative Fugue victim.

UPDATE: An online missing persons site reports that a body has been found May 7, 2000 in Miami Fl. The case is listed as solved by Paula Yocom and Detective Lenford Forbes in July 2004. Forbes is the detective in charge of the case at Ga Tech Police Department.
If that date proves true he died in Miami Florida the day after he disappeared from Ga Tech.
Cause of death is sealed for fifty years, unless you have a legal reason to inquire, according to Florida sites.
Jason Jolkowski made a phone call and arranged for a ride to work June 13, 2001. He was to meet his ride at his high school. Within 30/45 minutes the person called saying he failed to show up at the pick up site. He has not been seen since. He left pay checks at his old job and failed to appear for a new job days later. His car was left in the repair shop. The family estimated he had no more than sixty dollars pocket money when he disappeared.

Cindy Song
Also known as Hyunjung Song, 21, architectural design student at State College, Pennsylvania, disappeared after attending Halloween parties on October 31, 2001. She was seen entering her apartment but failed to show up for work the next day. Cindy had created a pink bunny outfit, not a fur character costume, including bunny ears. Her possessions, backpack, cell phone, and false eyelashes she had worn that night, were in the apartment. Her purse, driver's license, and credit cards were missing.
From the FBI site, she was wearing a blouse with an embroidered rabbit on it, a short skirt with a cotton tail, and rabbit ears when she disappeared. There is information in some newspaper links about a serial killer and bodies being found. One of those involved is quoted as saying there was a fight over which of them would get the bunny ears. Her body was not among the five or so excavated. She is still listed a missing person. (FBI missing persons site) Her national sorority still has a page for her. Her family came to Pennsylvania from Korea at the time of the disappearance.
There has been another TV program in which a psychic attempted to communicate with Cindy. It is not possible to determine if she is dead or alive. But even if she were in an altered delusional state, the nature of the delusion would determine what she took with her. Note that two of the missing students took money from an ATM but little else. (Morse but not Lyall was seen at the ATM.)

He disappeared Dec 12, 2002 while walking back to his residence from a party at Notre Dame. He was found about two months later. (An email to the Notre Dame campus police department located two stories in the student newspaper.)
A new article located revealed he was seen at a convenience store that night.

Brooke Wilberger
America's Most Wanted is reporting that a suspect who drove a green minivan seen rushing from the area of her abduction has been arrested in New Mexico. This disappearance was a suspected abduction when there were signs of a struggle at the apartments her sister managed. This story was not considered earlier because there was no evidence of dissociation, emotional, or somatic problems before the disappearance. The Maura Murray story below does have those elements.

Maura appeared to be functioning normally until she got the phone call from her sister. She began crying Feb 5th while on the phone at a security station in a residence hall. She was so upset that a supervisor had to escort her to her room. Her sister's news about a problem with her boy friend should not have upset Maura. She emailed teachers saying she would be gone a week to deal with a family problem. Another account on-line mentions that she said there had been a death in the family. Employers were asked for the same week leave but instead she had packed all her belongings in boxes. This is not something she would do if she intended to be gone one week. (Some family members have suggested that she had never unpacked the moving boxes. That would explain why her personal property was in boxes.) She withdrew $280 from her ATM and visited a liquor store. Video's at both locations show she was alone. She packed clothes and valuables in her car then drove away.
On February 8th, 3AM, she had wrecked her father's new car hitting a post beside the road. On February 9th, after leaving in her own car, she had a second accident on a snowy road leaving the car disabled. Her car had front end damage and the air bag had fired. A school bus driver stopped. She told him to call a wrecker but not the police, claiming she had already called AAA. That was not possible because of poor cell reception in that location. He lived a short distance away and dialed 911. The bus driver remembered hearing cars drive by while he waited for the police. Police arrived within ten minutes. She was gone. Snow cover demonstrated she did not leave the road, no disturbance or foot prints. A search dog lost her scent a short distance from the car. Her family believes this means she got into another car. Her credit cards and cell phone have not been used since. Two helicopter searches, the second after snow had melted, were made at tree top level with no result. There have been additional sweeps of the area by searchers on foot. Her father examined snow banks along the road just after the disappearance. Police talked to everyone living within a five mile radius. There is one person who believed he saw her walking about five miles from the accident the night of Feb. 9th. He did not come forward earlier because a he thought the accident happened two days after he drove the road. ----- She was a runner and could have moved away from the scene quickly. Had she been drinking she would have wanted to leave the car before police arrived. There are confusing statements in the many newspaper articles on line.
Records show she left a voice mail message for her boyfriend at 1Pm Monday. She wanted to talk to him (email?). Witnesses say she was seen on campus around 3/4 PM Monday afternoon. The accident happened after 7PM Monday Night. He got the voice mail Tuesday morning. There were only sounds he described as breathing and sounds like crying and whimpering. They had a joint account which allowed him to check her phone usage. Only two calls were made. The second was to her dorm phone to check her messages. Police traced one calling card phone call made to him in Oklahoma to the American Red Cross efforts to reach him.
All this points to her having a dissociative mental break. It is not possible to confirm what happened without information on her study location and the design of her computer workstation.
The first impression is that she began to experience an altered mental state by the time of her sister's phone call. The call did not cause the problem. She miss-perceived the message of the phone call. Whatever happened did so quickly from Feb. 5th to the 9th. This is consistent with our family experience. It would help to know how much her work and study load increased in the weeks just before she left. Did something change? Was something moved or altered near her computer? None of the facts or events point to a cause they just mark the progression of the episode.
What did she do at that security station in the residence hall? Was that a Work Study job? Sitting reading and studying as other students walked by would certainly create an episode. That's how this problem was discovered fifty years ago.
A short mention in the Caledonian-Record August 5th, 2004, states that two women believed they encountered Murray in a bar in Rochester early in July. Police discounted the sighting without giving a reason.

Stephen Adams December 13, 2004 Disappearance
An email from a Northwestern State University student brought this case to my attention. Police suspect foul play because of a child custody issue with his ex-wife. He had been charged twice with child abuse, both charges were dropped, and had limited visitation with his daughter. He missed the court date on that issue because of the disappearance.
There was an 11:07 phone call in which he told his girlfriend he planned to take someone to Keys, a Cherokee County town.
He did not appear at a Muskogee, Okla. restaurant for work, missed the remainder of his exams and has not been seen since. He was reported to have no cash and little gas in his truck, a 1995 GMC pickup.
There have been ground searches for him. There is a police sketch of a possible witness or involved person. There is a $1000 reward to locate the witness or supply information in the case.
There have been threats to his family that they would be harmed if the disappearance investigation did not stop.
Adams is a Cherokee Nation tribal citizen.

Patrick Welsh -- Deceased
He boarded a train from Harrisburg to New York on April 15. He has not been seen since. Harris's roommate Adam Bumgarner and Bumgarner's mother drove him to the train and were the last persons to see him. A homeless man found Welsh's cell phone and used it. School finals were May 7. One of his hobbies was given as playing video games.
This case parallels the case of Ahmad Arain from UCLA.
UPDATE Welsh's body was found in the Hudson River. He was identified by family. There is no cause of death available.
Craig Fear
June 26, 2004, Scotia New York, Craig Fear was last seen walking into the woods after he left his car. He was captain of the soccer team and a popular student. There is no information available to suspect he is a victim of Subliminal Distraction except the details of his disappearance and that he was a student. A high school junior he had a job at a local supermarket when he disappeared.
His wallet, drive's license, and forty dollars in cash were left in his bedroom. There has been no activity on his social security number since the disappearance. (He drove his car to the apartments where he walked away.)
Note that the bare facts, or outline of facts, parallel the beginning of the Mary Shotwell Little disappearance from Atlanta in 1965. The last contact that talked with him reports no out of the ordinary behavior before he walked away.
One account says he talked to a friend at the Cambridge Manor Apartments then walked into the woods behind the complex. The case has been referred to the State Police and the contact phone number given in early on-line accounts is incorrect; (518) 374 3110 is the correct number.
If he is a victim he is in an altered mental state and would not know who he is. This is called Dissociative Fugue. One of the purposes of this site is to establish the cause of Dissociative Fugue. If you have information on his activities from the list at the top of this page email me. Researcher.

Joran van der Sloot has changed his story. He gave an interview revealing that he sold Natalee to someone the night she disappeared. He claimed she left the beach by boat. He had been previously taped on hidden camera attempting to get women from Asia to go to Holland as waitresses/prostitutes.

There is an ongoing problem with missing high school and college students. The first recorded events happened at Miami of Ohio in 1953. (See the other entries on this page.) There is no body to prove that Natalee is dead.

Students disappear and commit suicide at times they would have had heavy exposure to Subliminal Distraction through computer use in incorrectly situated and designed workstations. (The Modern Cubicle) Only one student recovered and returned to UCLA last summer, Ahmad Arain. An outline and history of the phenomenon is at the bottom of this page.

Authorities in Aruba are reporting an arrest in the Natalee Holloway case. The person is identified as an associate of Joran van der Sloot, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. Geoffrey Von Cromvoirt, previously identified only by his initials "GVC," is 19 and is believed to have been located through a shirt found while searching for evidence. Attorneys for other suspects deny any knowledge of him. (Also spelled Cromvoit) Cromvoirt has stated he does not know the others involved and was not on beach patrol that night.
Cromviort's sister is a member of the "local police force," and his father is involved in security for the Holiday Inn. He was mentioned as a member of the "beach patrol." Another mentioned connection is that he is an acquaintance of the captain of the party boat anchored off shore where Natalee disappeared.

Natalee is currently in the news as missing in Aruba. There is no information that connects her to Dissociative Fugue except that she was a high achieving student and the disappearance happened after graduation. Her personal effects including her passport were left in her room. Early reporting told of some difficulty she had in a restroom but that was associated with drinking. Her personal effects and passport being left behind is easily explained because she had packed to leave the next morning. The current theory is that she was abducted and killed.
June 25, 2005 ...In the intervening weeks more has developed in the story but there is no trace of a body or of her alive.
The first account that she was dropped off at her hotel has changed. One of the three men she was seen with is reported as saying something bad happened.

October 4, 2005 The suspects have been released and Joran van der Sloot is giving interviews. The family is still appearing on cable TV news programs but no new information has developed.
Holloway's disappearance is being compared to Amy Bradley's disappearance. There is no time period when Holloway was unobserved. She was with friends who would have noticed anything she might have said or done that could have signaled a mental event was happening. The Robert Hornbeck case, (see the top of this page), might make that a moot point. Hornbeck was with a friend in a bar until minutes before he disappeared.
Although the two cases are different there are similarities. Bradley left her room in the middle of the night and had to have participated in her own disappearance. It would not have been possible to spirit her off the cruise ship otherwise. Remember she was seen with a member of the crew, apparently under no duress, and sighted on the beach the next morning. There was no mention of distress or of someone holding her at the time of that first sighting.
Holloway disappeared while in the company of three island residents. It might be possible for someone to have spirited her away in a private ship or small plane but not through public transportation, airliner or cruise ship. There is no evidence of that having happened in the Holloway case. If the three suspects knew that she left with someone else they would have said so to direct suspicion away from themselves. Unless she is being hidden by someone the searches eliminate her still being alive on the island. How would she eat or find water without being spotted by someone aware of the reward for her? (Ahmad Arain survived by drinking water from hoses in front yards while he walked to Mexico. Had he not recovered the family that rescued him would have eventually found out he was missing and that there was a reward for him.)
Discovering that Holloway had exposure to Subliminal Distraction at a level that would have caused a mental break would change the story but that is not possible. To date she remains a suspected murder victim.
Dr Phil McGraw, TV personality and relationship guru, appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno the week of October 24th. He told Jay that there is private information known only to those close to the family that indicates Natalee is still alive. (I saw the late night one week delayed broadcast.)

November 17, 2005, 4:39 EST: Natalee's mother, Beth Twitty, appeared on Scarborough Country and announced that she may have received a phone call from Natalee within the last five weeks. The message was a single utterance and could not be identified. This may be the piece of information Dr Phil mentioned on the Tonight Show. In a later interview, Rita Cosby, had a guest that revealed new information. A news reporter in Aruba believes he has seen Natalee with short dark hair and sunglasses.
Did Deepak admit the murder?
Until a body is found there is no evidence that she is dead. But the weight of information is to the conclusion that she was murdered.

The release of a audio tape secretly recorded in a police car tends to show that none of the suspects knows what happened. They had been told that each implicated the other then all three were placed in the car. The text of their argument reveals that they though Natalee might be found alive.

Tara Grinstead
She attended a pageant and dinner with friends October 22, arriving home about 11pm. Her house was locked and her car parked but unlocked. The clothes she wore that night were found inside establishing that she got home and was inside. Only her purse and keys are missing. Tara is said to have experienced emotional breaks in recent days. There had been an emotional confrontation with a former male friend. He had been an Ocilla policeman and is an Iraq veteran. She had been harassed by a former twenty-year-old student. She had a friendship with another policeman who attempted to contact her the night she disappeared. (Some accounts say he phoned as many as twenty times attempting to reach her.)
One account says that in recent weeks she took a drive after a failed reconciliation with her friend and had to call for help getting back home. There is conflicting information on the Forum attached to the Find Tara site linked to the right. I received an email that the forum had been closed and a new one opened. There is now a new site.
Tara was a doctorial candidate and attending classes. That would increase the possibility that she had exposure to Subliminal Distraction. Ylva Hagner (listed above) was a doctorial candidate also.

Saturday March 18, Channel 2 Atlanta News -- Police in Ocilla are saying that a forensic psychologist has investigated the disappearance scene inside her house and believes a crime was committed. The events leading up to the disappearance, emotional events, leaving school two times, becoming lost and having to call someone to bring her home still argue that she is a fugue victim.
July 2 2008 -- An interview with Gary Rothwell of the GBI was aired on the Fox Channel program On The Record revealing that a latex glove had been found on the lawn of Tara's house. It contained male DNA and a poor quality fingerprint. DNA swabs have been obtained from known male associates and there were no matches.
Marcus Harper, Tara's boyfriend at the time, appeared in the interview and recounted another incident of bizarre behavior. He said Tara had knocked on his window and he invited her in. She was crying, upset, and irrational. When he refused to continue their relationship she threatened suicide. This happened on the Friday before she disappeared.
Hannah Upp -- Recovered
Upp, like Grinstead, was a high school teacher. In the first stories there were mentions of her recent college work on an advanced degree. She went jogging and disappeared. Two roommates reported her missing. She was rescued while attempting suicide by jumping into New York harbor wearing the same outfit she disappeared in. It was revealed she had showered in athletic clubs by telling the staff she was a member and left her identification at home. There had been a ATM withdrawal the day before her disappearance.
Within a few days after her rescue she said she had no memory of events around the time of her disappearance. Interviews of her brother showed the family had read comments I posted on news stories about her. She claimed Dissociative Fugue although a psychiatrist was quoted to say the story did not follow the pattern of Dissociative Fugue.
Dissociative Fugue is diagnosed when someone is found who left a previous life and adopted a new identify with amnesia of the old one. There is little information about the events in the beginning of a fugue episode.
There is no understanding of how the different fugue disorders are connected nor is there objective evidence of a cause.

The rare occurrence of the
injury establishes that is difficult to create enough exposure to cause an
injury. But when it does happen the consequences are serious, possibly fatal.
Our personal experience
was intermittent human traffic during eight-hour workdays for thirty calendar
days.
If you have a tower CPU mount
it under your desk. That's the way they position it in a cubicle. The hard drive
busy light is about the height of your low peripheral vision if you put the
tower on the desk. Desktop reading of text or writing notes beside the keyboard
on the side of the monitor away from the tower makes the blinking hard drive
busy light appear to approach from behind when you turn to view the screen
again.
If you have a computer work
station/desk in which you turn ninety degrees to write or do other non computer
work, turn off the monitor when you turn aside. Remove screen savers in this
instance. The movement, animation for example, in your screensaver,
two-dimensional movement, might well be detected by your peripheral vision at
close range. Alternately cover the monitor screen.
All home, apartment, or
dorm computer workstations are in unprotected workspace.
To change that put the computer in a quiet room with no possible movement. If
that is not possible in a dorm or apartment position the computer so that your
peripheral vision can see only stationary walls as you use the computer in a
busy room. In Cubicles and 'Systems Furniture' these protective features are
achieved with peripheral vision blocking panels and corner seating positions. It
is called 'Cubicle Level Protection.'
If you use computer or CD-ROM
games for many hours day after day, the game playing position should follow the
same rules as the computer workstation. Battery operated games will not run long
enough on a single rechargeable battery to cause a risk for SPVP.
Although a laptop does not
have a visible blinking light in peripheral vision the same rules apply to your
work position. There should not be human traffic moving to you from
behind. There should be nothing behind you, which could enter your subliminal
peripheral vision field as you turn your head while working at the laptop and be
mistaken for threat movement.
Only movement coming from
behind you into your Subliminal Peripheral Vision can cause a peripheral vision
reflex. If the movement source approaches you from ahead then enters your
Subliminal Peripheral Vision from conscious sight there can be no peripheral
vision reflex.
Repeated for Emphasis:
A single session or rare
sessions will not cause this problem.
It is the same day after day
long hours of play or computer use with detectable movement in ‘Subliminal
Peripheral Vision,’ which would form the basis of a risk for SPVP injury.
Exposure can be cumulative
The brain’s detection system only evaluates movement. There is little recognition of the nature of the object in peripheral vision. If you have several hours exposure from human traffic at the library, while reading at an open table or seated in a reading room chair, followed by long hours watching TV with a critically misplaced ceiling fan sweeping detectable shadows around the room, the combination of those two behaviors might cause the problem. The suggestion is that either activity alone would not consume enough exposure time even if the critical movement is present.

Blinking lights The longer the light blinks the more opportunities there will be for the light to be swept through Subliminal Peripheral Vision.
Note: HP and Compaq have removed the bright blinking hard drive busy light from their computer CPU cases. The light is now available only if you look directly into a pencil eraser size clear plastic button. It is no longer detectable in normal use. Wireless note book cards are still a source of blinking lights in laptops.
Causes of constant blinking of your hard drive busy light.
Memory size: Low memory requires constant file swapping to the hard drive.
Program: Some programs require constant calculations such as Cad or electronics simulations.
Internet: Connection speed for dial-up will be a consideration. File size effects this.
Physical: The location of the blinking light relative to the monitor.
Games Internet or CD based computer games require constant hard drive/CD Rom activity.
Lighting Strong ambient light would make the LED hard to detect. Desk lamps at the CPU do the same thing.
Pattern
Unknown, it may be the case that the nature of the blinking has an effect. At the level in the brain where peripheral vision reflexes are triggered it is not possible to differentiate between the blinking point source light and reflected light. It is all electrical signals on nerves. Some patterns near brain wave frequencies might elicit stronger reactions than others.
Some new computers have eliminated blinking lights from the CPU case. Another source for a blinking light can be the PCMCIA wireless notebook card.
Movement in the room.
Lighting Humans see by reflected light. There must be sufficient light to detect a moving object.
Position The area of detection is small. Movement must cross subliminal sight areas to be detected as threat movement.
Size Plitz's reflex probably determines the minimum size of the object which can be detected.
Small objects will not be detected unless they are unusually bright, shiny.
Proximity The closer the better for detection. Distant movement seen through a window would not be detectable as
threat movement.
Human Factors
Unknown, stress or anxiety may be factors but there is no information available on this issue. Previous psychiatric symptoms such as in the case of Shawn Woolley, Everquest Connection, may make the episode deadly.
It is not clear what the triggering event is for Dissociative Fugue. It is listed in the DSM and on help pages on the Internet. There are several forms recognized and more than one diagnosis involving dissociative episodes. This diagnosis is referred to as Running on several international sites. The form of fugue which lasts for years is defined as rare. Remember, the definition for this diagnosis relies on those people who have been found. No one knows how many fugue victims actually exist.
There has been a recent case of Dissociative Fugue in the news. The man went to his car during a wedding event and never came back. He was found at an abandoned motel days later with injuries revealing he had been in the surrounding wooded area. He did not know who he was and had lost much of his ability to function. Although a DJ and musician," he had lost the meaning of music." (News reporter's words) He started relearning everything. Later he reported that his memory and abilities suddenly returned. The diagnosis of Dissociative Fugue was mentioned in the TV news report.
This site argues that the stress to cause some of these episodes is from a quirk of our physiology related to the human vision startle reflex.

This document outlines the material on my site. You would not be able to put this together quickly from a first reading of the material on the site. The site has links to articles and papers used to gather data. None of those sources mention the conflict of physiology or Subliminal Distraction.
The only source to verify this phenomenon is to talk to designers working for Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll or other manufacturer. Only the designer will have the information and they will not be willing to talk if they think you are about to write a tell-all article. They seem to believe the phenomenon causes a harmless temporary episode.
My brother owns a business that refurbishes cubicles and he did not know why they are designed with corner computer workstations and privacy screens.
I suggest finding a retired designer.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s office furniture manufacturers began a program to modernize the business office. Haworth introduced the first room partition walls in 1953. Herman Miller introduced the "Action Office 1" in 1964 but by 1968 had modified it by adding moveable panels creating the Action Office System or Cubicle. A biography of Robert Propst on the Herman Miller site claims the invention of the Cubicle in 1968.
What happened? Knowledge workers using the first production models of newly designed workstations began to have mental breaks. Subliminal Sight and Peripheral Vision Reflexes had operated in the "special circumstances" the new workstations created to cause mental events.
Those designers, engineers, and psychologists thought they had created this problem for the first time. They failed to understand it is a problem of human physiology not office workspace. It will appear anywhere the "special conditions" are created and maintained long enough to cause a critical level of exposure to Subliminal Distraction.
Sudden Violence
In the 1830’s mountain men, fur trappers, would rather over-winter alone than risk that their cabin-mate would go berserk and try to kill them. It was called Cabin Fever. The Navajo called it iich’aa. In Malaysia it is called Amok, as in running amok. Here in the United States it is called Going Postal and is a Culture Bound Syndrome of the US. The Redlake school shooter left a journal entry describing an activity to cause exposure to Subliminal Distraction for him. The Conyers Georgia shooter, in prison, has serious psychiatric symptoms, hearing voices, to indicate he had a mental break to cause the shooting. The act of using a computer in unprotected workspace with movement in peripheral vision copies the "special circumstances."
Blinking lights, incorrectly positioned, can be mistaken for threat movement if a turn of your head brings them into peripheral vision from behind.
Video Games
In 2001 and 2002 there was an uproar that accused Sony of putting script in Everquest to make it addictive. No one examined the workstations of those who were effected. I have an email from actor Ben Stein that there was a single large fish in the aquarium beside Tommy Stein when Tommy had a problem with Everquest.
Tommy could subliminally detect movement of the fish while he played Everquest. That would have caused exposure to Subliminal Distraction. Tommy recovered when he was sent to an outward-bound camp. Shawn Woolley, an adult living alone, committed suicide.
If the content of games were a problem every one would have a similar experience. The warning on video games and other software should be that Cubicle Level Protection may be required for computer workstations located where there is movement in peripheral vision. Most computer manufacturers have removed bright blinking lights from their CPU cases.
Disappearances
Artisans, clerks, and small shop owners began to disappear during the 1880’s in France. The problem spread to Germany, France, and Russia. Today it is called Dissociative Fugue. ("Mad Travelers," Hacking.) Those occupations involve knowledge work. Students are knowledge workers. One person walked from France to Moscow before regaining his senses. Dr. Hacking blamed ecological niches and running away from self.
When I spoke with the cold case officer about the Mary Shotwell Little disappearance, 1965, he remembered that the Atlanta Police Department had a problem with the phenomenon and switched to cubicles. They had never connected the business office problem with the strange disappearance. If Little is still alive she would be about sixty-five,
Bizarre Behavior
A New York neurologist heard of strange behaviors in French Canadian lumberjacks at Mooselake Maine. He visited the area in 1880 and the disorder became known as Jumping Frenchmen of Maine Disease. Later it appeared in other lumber camps in Canada. It is known as Latah in Malaysia and by other names around the world. In all cases the victims live in single-room huts, hogans, or other structures. In Mooselake lumberjacks lived in bunkhouses and in Malaysia entire villages lived in a single-room longhouse.
When many people live in close quarters they can accidentally create the "special circumstances" that allow exposure to Subliminal Distraction when one person performs work requiring concentration, to a level of slight dissociation, while the others move in the worker’s peripheral vision.
Psychiatric Outcomes
The most revealing incident happened on the Belgian Polar Expedition of 1898. Eighteen otherwise normal sailors and scientists began to go insane when the Belgica, a converted whaler, was trapped in polar ice for almost a year. The ship had been renovated using a single-room living and working space. ("Through the First Antarctic Night," Cook) There was one death from fright, one man became a deaf mute, another hid in small spaces to sleep believing the others were plotting to kill him. They began to return to normal when the ship was blasted out of the ice and began the return trip home. No one has solved the mystery of what happened aboard the Belgica.
Today
One in three patients who spend more than five days in a hospital intensive care unit has a mental break. They tear out needles and tubes, fight with attendants, but most completely recover when they leave the ICU. No one knows why.
The CDC in Atlanta refused communication stating that they only take information from government sources. Of the many researchers I emailed only Vanderbilt replied and expressed interest.
Although the victim is in bed, daydreaming while in the ICU copies the mental concentration necessary, and movement of nurses and attendants copies the movement of office staff around an unprotected knowledge worker.
The flight engineer aboard Soyuz 21 had a mental break and the mission had to be halted. Toxic gases were blamed but the close confinement of a space capsule creates the situation for exposure to Subliminal Distraction.
Mental breaks have happened on scientific expeditions and aboard US Navy submarines. There it is called ‘Screaming Seaman." ("Bold Endeavors," Stuster) Many things have been blamed but duty stations on submarines do not have Cubicle Level Protection. One man at an Antarctic station became so psychotically paranoid he had to be sedated until spring.
Altered Mental States
For over 3000 years users of Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga believed that the exercises allowed them to transcend normal reality.
Qi Gong masters believe that if they perform slow motion martial arts katas in-groups while maintaining an eyes-open meditating state they can manipulate powerful universal life energy. They have mental breaks too. Qi Gong Psychotic Reaction or Deviation is listed as a Culture Bound Syndrome of China. It takes imagination to see it but their activity copies the business office "special circumstances."
Think about that again. If you stand in a group and perform martial arts movements in unison you transcend physics, gravity, and normal reality. Harvard Med is studying Qi Gong. I get frequent site hits from Harvard.
When too many exercise sessions are done in a compact time frame a temporary psychotic episode happens. But when the exposure is low and persistent the exercise creates fixed altered mental states. Qi Gong masters begin to believe they have superhuman or supernatural powers. They believe they can cast Qi (chee) energy from their fingertips to strike others. The leader of the Falun Gong movement has performed Qi Gong since he was six. He recently declared that he is God. In a Time Asia interview he said the most serious problem facing the world today is that extraterrestrial aliens are cloning humans to take over the Earth.
When Kundalini Yoga users begin to hear voices, feel strange sensations they believe they are experiencing an Awakening of Kundalini. Long term users believe they can levitate, dematerialize at will, walk through solid objects, read your thoughts and control your actions through mental telepathy. This is not considered mental illness because within their groups of common belief set and culture they are revered as enlightened.
Both exercises create the circumstances to allow exposure to Subliminal Distraction.
I believe some missing students are victims of Dissociative Fugue caused by exposure from Subliminal Distraction. It is not possible to determine which ones are victims without searching their rooms and activities for sources of exposure.
It is just random chance that a news reporter will mention something like Maura Murray’s mental event.
Missing Students
There was an outbreak at Miami of Ohio in 1953. Several students disappeared, recovered, then returned with amnesia of the events during the episode. When Ron Tammen disappeared they thought he would return too.
When they began searching for him a woman said he walked up to her porch and asked directions to a nonexistent bus stop. He was too lightly dressed for the cold night. There was snow on the ground. He was confused and didn’t know his own name.
You can link to the site sponsored by the Library at Miami University from my Missing Students page and see his unprotected study desk in a tiny room for two people. Fisher Hall was donated to the University. It was an insane asylum. The room had been sized, intended, for a single patient.
Of the list of missing students only Ahmad Arain recovered and returned to UCLA. A non-English speaking family found him wandering in Mexico in an altered mental state. He was a computer sciences major and recently moved back home to save money. (He would have changed the design of his computer workstation when he returned home.)
Tara Grinstead, Ocilla Georgia seems to be the latest victim.
Conflict of Physiology
The detection of threat movement from behind to cause a startle or peripheral vision reflex happens at a level in the brain that is below thought, reason, or consciousness. There is no memory associated with the subliminal detection of movement and only movement and position are involved.
This means you can have exposure from more than one source every day. Your brain can’t tell that there is more than one source. When a threshold of exposure is reached the mental break happens.
The conflict of physiology is that while you can learn to ignore the reflexes that break your concentration, you can’t "stop seeing" anything in your vision field and you can’t tell your brain to stop detecting that movement then attempting to force a reflex. Our physiology is not adapted to sitting in unprotected space with movement in peripheral vision. We developed as hunter gathers and there was no activity to shape our evolution to the modern business situation.
Just telling schools and students of the problem requiring Cubicle Level Protection should stop both suicides and disappearances.
The problem sounds so fantastic that no one believes it the first time they hear it.

Mykensie Martin This case was probably a Dissociative Fugue incident.
News programs on cable news networks are reporting that she disappeared over the weekend. She had been in Brazil since July on a Rotary student exchange program. She left Carmo do Paranaibaby by bus Sunday and should have returned after attending church in Patos de Minas, forty miles away. Initial reports are that she exchanged her bus ticket and paid a premium for a ticket to Unai 150 miles away. She was seen hitchhiking on the road from Unai to Brasilia. It is unknown how she got to Salvador, 690 miles north of Brasilia. A news reporter found her living in a youth hostel.
Martin was a senior at Summit High School in Bend, Oregon.
The sole piece of information that might link her to the conflict of physiology is that she is a high achieving student with no history of this type behavior. (
Current interviews are reporting she is physically unharmed but emotionally distraught over the events.
The psychobabble about what might have caused her disappearance has already started.

Taylor Marie Behl
A body has been found and dental records identified Taylor Behl. .
Taylor Behl disappeared after leaving her roommate in their dorm room. Police arrested two men on unrelated charges. Eventually one of Ben Frawley's former girlfriends identified pictures on his computer as being from property near her relatives in Mathews county, Virginia. Behl was found buried behind a barn.

Olamide Elizabeth Adeyooye, a 21 year old University of Illinois student, disappeared after 9pm on Thursday. (October 13?) She was last seen at a video store. The rental videos were found in her apartment when friends broke in looking for her. This NBC News 25 story is all the information available at this time. She is of Nigerian descent about five feet tall and weighs 110 pounds. He car is a dark green 1996 Toyota Corolla with license plate LBG-927.
MSNBC is reporting her remains have been identified. She was found in a burned chicken house in Mississippi. 4:27 pm Wednesday Oct. 26, 2005
Maurice Lashon Wallace has been named a suspect in the death. He is from Atlanta.

Ahmad Arain disappeared July 23, 2004 after leaving a bus at the Imperial/Wilmington Rosa Parks bus station in Watts. He was traveling to an appointment with a counselor at UCLA. The only information which might link him to SPVP is the fact that he was a Computer Science Major and honor student. He had an 1500 SAT and a full scholarship to UCLA. It is not clear from the news report whether he lived in an apartment or at home. There is little information on-line since this disappearance happened only seven days ago. He might be the victim of violence but nothing turned up in police investigations. There were bus security cameras. The last contact was by phone to his mother saying that he was switching buses in downtown LA. He had a cell phone but cell phone stopped working around 11:15 AM. Ahmad explicitly arranged to have his brother pick him up at 5:30 pm at the Disneyland bus depot.
A new article in the Daily Bruin reveals that:
"Authorities believe Arain boarded the No. 305 MTA bus headed for
UCLA at 10:43 a.m. July 23 and exited at 11:30 a.m. at the San Vicente Boulevard
and McCarthy Vista stop – about 6 miles from UCLA.
Authorities do not know why Arain got off at that particular stop, which is not

I left a message at the family's phone numbers and a call was made to the UCLA Police Department. The officer was only interested in information that would lead to a quick solution. He did take the URL and my phone number.
Today, Labor Day, the site started receiving hits for a search term <Ahmad Arain +Mexico +found>. I have a news search in place from Google but there are no new articles available on line. It is about 1430 hours here in Georgia.
Tuesday, stories began to appear that he was found wandering along a road. He was taken in by a family that spoke no English, he spoke no Spanish. Within two weeks with the family he had recovered enough to email his family.
This is what I told the UCLA Police Department had happened to him.

Nate Hendrickson
Texas Equusearch is reporting that a body found near a lake is believed to be Hendrickson. The body appears to have been there about a month. He is an apparent suicide.

Twenty-four year old Nathanial Hendrickson has not been seen since November 30th. He had an argument with his stepfather then made phone plans to meet a friend, according to an interview on Nancy Grace, December 22nd. His wallet and cell phone were left in his room but his Teal 2000 Nissan Sentra is missing. (Tx Lisc L76DKL) Accounts mention that he took nothing with him. There was a mention that the "family gun" is missing.
His employer at a Mexican restaurant said he had not missed work or been late until the disappearance.
He was last seen using a family computer. A computer was pictured on the Nancy Grace program and it was correctly positioned with the LCD screen in a corner. There did not seem to be any design problem with the workstation. But I did not see the CPU placement in that short film segment. Police may have removed it.
His car has been found in a mall parking lot. Tickets on the car show it was abandoned on December 1 the day after he disappeared. There were no additional clues associated with the car.
It would help to know what the argument was about. There are several cases where there was some disturbance just before the student committed suicide or disappeared.
The last post date on his My Space account is not correct. His sister's post states that the entry was by the My Space administration attempting to find information about him.

If you came to this page because of an email I sent you seeking information on your missing student this is the information I want from you.
There is no rush. I understand some friends or parents will not have this information. I am asking for your cooperation in collecting as many of these observations as possible. Answer as many of the questions as you can.
This list is being positioned in advance of another incident involving another student.
If your student is not listed below it is because of my health problems and
those of my wife. If I emailed you I have a file folder with information on your
missing student.
Beginning information to be gathered if possible is a description of the
computer workstation involved. If the CPU was observed on top of the desk
estimate the distance between a vertical center line of the monitor viewing
screen and the center line of the CPU tower. Simple measurements values should
be used since most information will be from memory or pictures taken by friends.
For instance, did the tower almost touch the monitor? Was something between the
monitor and tower? Would you say the tower was far to one side? Which side? Was
there a workspace on the side of the keyboard away from the monitor?
Where was the non-computer work done?
If the computer tower case was mounted correctly under the desk describe the room.
Did the student have hobbies, pets in the room?
If the student had a laptop computer, or a non-tower CPU case, relative to
either side of the position where the laptop was used, was there anything
in the room that moved? This would include
ceiling fans, oscillating fans or heaters, lava lamps, toys, or blinking lights.
The movement must be located near the computer user unless it is a reflection of
light or point source of light in a dim room. Give a rough description of color,
reflectivity, size of the object, distance from the computer, and approximate
position using the computer as 12 o'clock on a clock face parallel to the floor.
Directly behind the student would be 6 o'clock. (Just describe the situation as
well as you can.)
Did the student play video games such as Playstation, Nintendo? If so did they play with others on the same machine? (Dual Controller)
Was the student nearsighted? Did he or she wear contacts?
If the student had a roommate in a dorm room describe the room. Were there any
provisions at the desk or study area to block peripheral vision of the student?
Can the roommate be reached to report on behavior using the study area or
computer workstation?
Is any one aware of a work or study area the student spent time almost daily?
(The total amount of exposure may be the critical factor.)
Did he or she play CD or Internet games, MMORPG's? Name the games if you can.
Did the computer have a screensaver? Try to find the name of the screensaver.
There may be a descriptive file name on the hard drive. If you can't find those
items describe the screensaver.
If you have the computer look for large files the student created such as term
papers. This might provide a clue for you as to what a delusional belief system
might be. This is a long shot. It might stir a memory of something done or said
by the student.
There is no point in gathering more involved information until a possible
pattern develops.
How will this help find a missing student? Evidence that your missing student is a victim of this psychiatric injury would tell you to look further away. Most of the information I can find on Dissociative fugue indicates that victims are found hundreds of miles away from the disappearance site. Kristen Modafferi disappeared from California and is believed to have been sighted in Nicaragua. There is only one recent case where the victim was found in the immediate area. In most of these cases there were extensive ground searches close to the disappearance area.
Ahmad Arain, UCLA missing student, was located in Mexico in an altered mental state. Joseph Morse died in Miami Florida the day after he disappeared at Georgia Tech, Atlanta, Georgia.
