This page explains why Qi Gong works.

The medical benefits and serious mental events are caused by the same phenomenon.

This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected  until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

The Everquest Connection page has the explanation and assumes you have not taken basic psychology.

The solution for this problem was the office Cubicle.

This site argues that the this phenomenon causes College Suicides and Missing Students.

The phenomenon causes mental events around the world, Chaco Canyon.

If you use computers in unprotected workspace such as homes, dorms, student apartments, and small business offices read  ...Prevention... at the bottom of most pages.

Long  term exposure can cause severely altered mental states. Qi Gong  Kundalini Yoga

Qi Gong provides great benefits to those who perform the slow motion martial arts katas. If you believe learning how that actually happens will destroy your enjoyment of Qi Gong, including your belief in Chee, the universal life energy.   ...Stop Reading Now!

I am going to tell you what actually happens to cause the benefits you see as well as the psychotic episodes that happen when this therapy modality fails.

Scroll Down to continue.

When viewed from above it is easier to see that group exercise creates movement in peripheral vision.

Subliminally detected movement in peripheral vision is a Subliminal Distraction.

SD stimulates your brain at a level below thought, reason, and consciousness.

When your brain understands that stimulus as reinforcement of thought, Subliminal Accidental Operant Conditioning happens.

If those thoughts were of improved health from Qi Gong you will be conditioned to feel better.

A case history from China shows it is possible to become addicted to the stimulation of your subconscious.

Didn't your common sense tell you there was a simple reason Qi Gong improves health that does not involve magic?

There is still time to stop reading if you don't want to know this.

Little is known about the physiology of what actually happens to cause benefits from Qi Gong. Schools such as Harvard are studying Qi Gong and can record changes in the body for those who perform the exercise. They can't find out why the changes occur. Advocate users claim that the exercise balances the flow of Chee (Qi) in the body.

Chee is more difficult to explain. It arises in the theory that there is a universal life energy that flows in all things. Chee is believed to be the energy that creates the universe and everything in it. Chee is invisible and silent.

In truth it is a concept of the human mind to explain psychiatric outcomes from performing both Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga.

In yoga the same concept is called Prana and the desired outcome is called the Awakening of Kundalini.

When there are serious psychiatric problems that arise from performing Qi Gong users claim the victim must be doing the exercise wrong, thus miss-handling powerful life energy.

Even demons have been given as the reason for the mental breaks. Now most sites correctly state that the adverse mental events happen when too many Qi Gong sessions are done in too little time.

They also correctly say that if you slow down and reduce the exercise frequency the problem will stop.

But the same sites still blame powerful universal life forces.  There is a simpler explanation.

In the 1960's designers discovered a previously unknown problem with human physiology when office workers began having mental breaks.

They were using newly designed close-spaced office workstations. Herman Miller Inc. introduced the first prototype, the 'Action Office 1,' in 1964 but had modified it by adding vision blocking panels, creating the first cubicle, by 1968. The mental breaks stopped.

Cubicles and Cubicle Level Protection are designed to block side or peripheral vision to prevent subliminally detecting movement close beside you as you concentrate to work. (Explained below.)

How does that connect to Qi Gong?

When the exercise is correctly performed in group sessions the user is copying the "special circumstances" that caused those 1960's mental breaks in business offices.

Eyes-open concentration to correctly perform the movements substitutes for the mental investment to perform knowledge work in a business office. The movement of others in the exercise group substitutes for office staff walking too-close beside a concentrating unprotected worker.

The levels of exposure, eight hours daily in business offices, and a few hours each week for Qi Gong sessions are certainly different. But your brain only detects movement and position to trigger a peripheral vision reflex so that exposure is cumulative.

Exposure from more than one source can lead to the mental events.

Exposure from Subliminal Distraction only happens when Qi Gong is performed in groups.  For illustrations of exposure see the Space Station page.

The office furniture industry believes the mental events are a harmless temporary period of confusion and pseudo-psychotic behavior. The mental break will disappear with no treatment if exposure stops.

While this is also true of the first psychotic episodes created by Qi Gong, if the exposure is low level, long term, users may have fixed psychotic-like altered mental states. They may claim superhuman strength and supernatural powers. One of these is the ability to throw Chee from their fingertips to strike others.

So what is actually happening?

Humans evolved from hunter-gather pre-humans, We retain a vision driven warning system that will break our concentration with a startle if something attempts to approach us while we are concentrating, or lost in thought. Daydreaming is enough dissociation to engage this warning system.

If you have ever startled when someone stepped up beside you or if you 'caught something out of the corner of your eye,' that was the warning system at work.

A small slice of your vision field operates subliminally to detect threat movement. (Perform the psychology exercise on the Demonstration page to experience habituation to extinction and subliminal functioning.)

There is a conflict in the physiology of sight relative to this system, and the vision startle reflex. We have the ability to ignore detected movement that repeats and is not dangerous to us. The startle will stop but that does not turn off the system. That is the conflict.  You can ignore the warning system and detected threat movement but you can't turn the system off. The subliminal operation of this system prevents your being aware that your brain is still detecting the triggering movement and still trying to force the startle and vision reflex. Both the detected movement and the internal attempts to force the reflex are called visual Subliminal Distraction.

Subliminal Distraction has an additional definition in psychology in the United States. It refers to acoustic subliminal distraction when noise is subliminally detected as subliminal sound. When this happens in a business office it is believed to be a fatiguing factor.

Video Clips On-Line

If you perform a YouTube search for Qi gong there seems to be an endless list of short videos.

What you see in  Dim Mak videos is extreme suggestibility. Small-group practice sessions create the same exposure as Qi Gong if the person concentrates to a level of light dissociation for knowledge of events happening around them.

When the subliminal threat-detection signal from peripheral vision is understood as a reinforcement stimulus, "Accidental Subliminal Operant Conditioning" happens. You might view this as accidental subliminal hypnosis. It is not complex. The subject is conditioned to believe bizarre things accepting them although they contradict reality and testable Newtonian physics.

These people are not lying or faking. They believe Dim Mak in the same way that a paranoid psychotic believes that others are trying to harm them.

Another place this hyper-suggestibility appears is in the Jumping Diseases, or Startle-Matching behaviors. Jumping Frenchmen of Maine stands out among that group. Many people living and working in a too-small single-room arrangement such as a bunk house in 1800's Maine lumber camps provided the opportunity for creation of the "special circumstances" for Subliminal Distraction exposure.

From time to time I find forum comments that indicate the reader did not understand the problem. This comment is from Martial Arts Planet.

"If that was the case I think everyone that drove a car for a significant amount of time would go nuts. Also, everyone that worked in an open plan office would go nuts. In fact, just about any activity repeated daily has the potential of making you loose the plot. Its all that damn peripheral vision! Maybe we should get those things they put on horses so that they look straight ahead. Bahhhh…

IMO, tis
a load of uneducated and inexperienced waffle, probably got some other agenda or maybe been hitting the crack pipe."

This person started out on the right track but he didn't get it.

Everyone has a normal level of exposure from this phenomenon. That normal exposure is harmless. Serious outcomes begin to happen when you accidentally create "special circumstances" that cause a high volume of exposure in a compact time frame. Performing Qi Gong will do that when you have too many sessions in a compact time frame.

Speaking of going nuts, visit the Psychotic Mental Illness page or the Astronauts & Insanity page. Why is one person so seriously effected rather than another? I don't know. But there is a defect in the M-Channel for vision in the brains of  some schizophrenics and their close but disease free relatives. Something of that nature might explain it. Other possibilities for excess exposure are inherited personality traits that cause activities which increase exposure, Daydreaming in classrooms and children who watch rather than participate, have been statistically connected to children who later become schizophrenic. This explains the connection for high intelligence, creativity, and mental illness. Those who possess gifts of that nature are more likely to have activities that allow exposure.

You can have the mental break because your total accumulate exposure from all sources exceeds your personal threshold.

Why is exposure cumulative?

Your brain reports only position and movement to trigger a peripheral vision reflex. You identify the movement when you turn and look. If you ignore detected movement you never identify it and all such movement is then a subliminal distraction. The brain cannot tell that the sources of movement are different. Shape and color are not included in the signal to trigger the reflex. In fact stationary objects in far peripheral vision, subliminal sight, are invisible.

(This information on peripheral vision reflexes is from first semester psychology, psychophysics. The true features of subliminal sight related to triggering peripheral vision reflexes are so bizarre that no one believes it the first time they hear it. If you have that problem find a friend, who did take psychology in college, to verify it for you.)

If you read the other pages on this site you will learn I encountered this problem more than forty years ago.

I was an engineering student. One morning I read a newspaper story that an office worker had "gone crazy" because something was moving behind her.  We passed the story around and joked about it. The joking continued all day until we got to computer class, Fortran on a Mainframe. Some one passed the newspaper to the instructor and said, " That's not true, is it? You can't go crazy because something is moving behind you, right? The instructor said it was true because he remembered when it was discovered.

I encountered it again in a psychophysics lecture in about 1990.

The problem was described and explained. The instructor leaned across the podium as if to look every class member in the eye and said, "Did  you know it is possible to see something and not have it recorded by your conscious mind?" Later in the lecture the problem was explained,  "As a person continues to resist the startle reflex a conflict arises in the mind, then builds to a mental break."

When my wife has a psychotic mental break at her desk in the Payroll Office of the University of Alabama, 2002, it was about three weeks before I realized what had happened.

I was stunned to find that something I had known most of my life, why the cubicle was created,  is unknown in any area of mental health services. When we moved to the University of Alabama Psychiatric Surgical Hospital I phoned a Steelcase dealer in Birmingham to verify my memory. I asked for the name of the problem. They didn't know. Emails to Steelcase did not find a name for it either.

Last year Design student emailed me from Australia for permission to use my site in her thesis on Subliminal Distraction.

That is the correct name for this problem outside the United States. Here the term subliminal distraction refers to sounds, noise, subliminally perceived in similar situations in business offices. That audio stimulation is believed to be a factor in fatigue. Since sound cannot trigger a vision reflex, sound cannot cause the mental effects that visual Subliminal Distraction can.

Designers believe this phenomenon causes a harmless temporary episode of confusion and pseudo-psychotic behavior. This site collects circumstantial evidence that this is not true. (But you must surf the site to find it. The mental breaks happen many places where they have never heard of Qi Gong, Too-small single-room traditional or ethnic housing provides the opportunity to create the special circumstances. Mental breaks have happened on polar expeditions for generations. They have even happened on Russian space missions, Soyuz-21.)

Until I began to investigate no one had made the connection to Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga. All the other cases had psychobabble explanations involving the fragility of the human psyche.

Today NASA and the Russian space agency are attempting to determine why the isolation of two or more men in too-small single-room living arrangements causes psychological problems. Take a guess.

The Everquest Connection page has the explanation of the psychology involved. On that page the explanation is related to MMORPG players and apparent addiction. But the physiology and psychology are the same. That page is a long read but there is nothing above the level of first semester general psychology. There has been a second suicide of a video game player.

On-line pages for QiGong state that is not religion based as Yoga appears to be but rather can serve as a tool to improve physical and mental health. Kundalini Yoga though includes the belief that the awaking experienced is contact with the Goddess Kundalini.

Astronauts & Insanity page reviews articles and books to show that Subliminal Distraction symptoms appear in polar expeditions and space missions.

Dissociative Fugue is sudden travel away from home that may leave amnesia of the events during the fugue state. Psychologists blame stress and 'running away from self.' But victims of fugue have activities or occupations that would cause exposure from Subliminal Distraction. This was true for the first recorded cases in 1880's France.

Jumping Frenchmen of Maine Syndrome had such strange behaviors that it cannot be argued that the cases were some other disorder. Startle matching behaviors happed in many cultures. This means they are not caused by the different stresses of each culture. That allows them to be used to explain Culture Bound Syndromes.

Culture Bound Syndromes are mental events that happen around the world. Current theory is that the special stresses of each culture cause these mental breaks and altered mental states. Going Postal is a CBS of the United States. Amok is a similar attack on people in Malaysia. Among the Navajo sudden attacks are named iich'aa. Many other CBS's involve these attacks. During the fur trapping period in the United States sudden berserk violence against a cabin mate was called Cabin Fever.

There is a concept that  katas can be selected for specific treatments.  There is no difference in the stimulation to the subconscious except for the level of threat movement that can be detected due to the kata. Performers believe they are working toward a specific medical treatment. Operant conditioning happens when that belief is reinforced by the subconscious stimulation as if hypnosis had been performed.

Think of the last time you were startled. It happens so fast that there is no time for your brain to think and identify the source of movement. You do that when you turn your head and look at the movement. The point here is you can have exposure at other locations such as at a poorly designed business office. That would magnify the effect when you use Qi Gong or Kundalini Yoga. The additional exposure of Qi Gong would push you toward the threshold of the mental break. Cause of Psychotic Mental Illness

Early in the research, eighteen months ago, I found a news announcement of a paper that demonstrated an attempt to facilitate learning by flashing words in peripheral vision while the subject read a text containing those words. Later tests determined the ability to remember flashed words when compared to other selected words from the text. This was an attempt to by pass the usual process for study and memory by using  peripheral vision as a channel to the subconscious. Accidental Operant Conditioning does just that. AOC allows the subject to be stimulated through the subconscious without his knowledge. This stimulation, to consciousness, is the generated signal  to cause a peripheral vision reflex. The reflex happens instantaneously when the signal from your retina meets the criterion. It does not matter if the signal from the retina should have caused the attempt to create a peripheral vision reflex or not.

Although you ignore the stimulus and stop the full  peripheral vision reflex from happening. thus breaking  your concentration,  you cannot stop seeing the movement which will continue to be detected and cause your brain to continue to attempt to generate additional reflexes. Each time that internal brain signal for a failed peripheral vision reflex is understood to be reinforcement for what  you are doing Accidental Operant Conditioning happens.

In the case of QiGong performed for medical treatments the subject is conditioned to feel better because the contemporaneous thought is to direct the flow of Qi  (chee) to facilitate that medical effect. The belief that you are being helped is solely generated within your mind. Because the connection between the subconscious and health improvement is unknown it may just be that you are helped by the deep mental belief that you will improve through QiGong therapy. It works.

On both the College Suicides and Missing Student pages the fact that a  misperception of threat movement, can be generated by a blinking light, is used to argue that Accidental Operant Conditioning is at the bottom of both the increase of college suicides and college student disappearances  When you turn your head while using an incorrectly installed desk top computer the blinking hard drive busy light sweeps through Subliminal Peripheral Vision from behind, relative movement. The signal from your retina would be the same as if there were actually something or someone approaching  you from behind.  In both cases the stimulus is neural impulses.

QiGong Deviation or Psychotic Reaction happens when the total compressed exposure exceeds the threshold for each individual.

Case histories from China indicate that victims begin to practice Qi Gong to excess, become addicted, can't stop.

The depth or strength of the psychotic mental break will depend on each individual's total exposure as well as the nature or direction of the episode. In Kundalini Yoga, Guru's use the episode and physical symptoms as evidence of the  Awakening of Kundalini.  Acolytes are told that  hearing voices, and the belief that they can levitate or dematerialize at will is proof that they have reached a higher state of awareness. They have been doing this for 3000 years. These Yogis live within the normal community and are revered as enlightened. Kundalini Yoga

The belief system is so narrowly focused that the Guru acts and functions normally. They are revered in their community of common belief set and are considered enlightened.

It has not occurred to anyone in China, India, or the United States that these beliefs are psychotic. The Gurus and Yogis are not lying or pretending. They believe they can perform these feats.

Note:  If you appeared at the intake desk of a psychiatric emergency room with the belief system of either of these exercise forms you would be held for observation. Political correctness and support for religious freedom allow the bizarre belief system to be considered normal.

"...WOWFAF..." (Walk On Water, Flap Arms Fly)

It doesn't matter who you are or what you religious beliefs are. If you think you can levitate, dematerialize, become invisible, communicate-control the acts of others through telepathy, you are psychotic. It is the narrow focus of these beliefs that allow the person to function as if they were normal that is of interest to this discussion.

Treatment

This link is to a treatment for PTSD Note that it uses movement in the vision field while distressing thoughts are held in mind with the suggestion that they will disappear. It would seem to be using Subliminal Distraction to reprogram the brain.

Department of Veteran's Affairs

"The patient is then asked to hold the disturbing image, sensations, and the negative cognition in mind while tracking the clinician's moving finger back and forth in front of his or her visual field for about 20 seconds. In successive tracking episodes, the patient concentrates on whatever changes or new associations have occurred. Tracking episodes are repeated according to the protocol until the patient has no further changes. More tracking episodes then reinforce the positive cognition."

Zen and QiGong

Zen is a Japanese word but the concept of Zen comes from India through China then to Japan. When performing Qi Gong the beneficial direction of Qi (chee) is accomplished by entering a Zen state, also known as 'entering silence'. That state of ultimate concentration would meet the requirement for disregarding every thing going on around you including annoying peripheral vision reflexes.

Your eyes must be open before Accidental Operant Conditioning can happen. This is a sight driven phenomenon.

QiGong cures illness - quotes

"Qigong meditation works best by far in the company of a group. While one must regularly practice alone at home, this is not enough. When people come together to practice qigong, they put their biological fields in proximity. These fields begin to resonate with one another, and so to multiply the benefits of practice for each person. For this to happen requires two things. First, ill people must truly want to get rid of their diseases. Second, they must cultivate the positive, open and optimistic attitude necessary for resonating in harmony with the field.

It does help to play a trick with one's mind when doing qigong to treat some specific problem. So long as one's mind is focused on a specific problem of ill health it is not possible to enter fully into the deep qigong state in which lasting healing can occur. One must therefore learn to forget about the problem and look only for general benefits. If the cosmic forces of the universe are to do their healing task, we must be fully open to receive them."

"TIME: Where do they come from?

Li: The aliens come from other planets. The names that I use for these planets are different . Some are from dimensions that human beings have not yet discovered. The key is how they have corrupted mankind. Everyone knows that from the beginning until now, there has never been a development of culture like today. Although it has been several thousand years, it has never been like now. "      The Quote is copy/paste

Reiki (ray-kee) Usui Shiki Ryoho means Usui System of Natural Healing. Reiki is  'universal life energy.'

Dr Mikao Usui created this from of medical treatment around the turn of the century, late 1800's.. The belief is that Reiki is a energy force that flows from the healer to the patient by the laying on of hands. (Healing Touch) This may help even though the reason is not what the advocates think it is. It is not massage. Proponents claim distance healing.

Quote from Reiki.org:

"As running water smoothes the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki restores balance in one's life."

Falun Dafta website

Books by Li Hongzhi are available for free downloading. Some of the claims are instructive as to his mental state. In Zaun Falun, Turning the Law wheel, First Talk, he tells of a nuclear reactor built two billion years ago in Gabon, Africa and operated for 500,000 years.

http://www.falundafa.org/

"In 1972 a plant in France imported that uranium ore, and after chemical analysis they found that the uranium ore had already been tapped and used....Scientists from a lot of countries went there to investigate. They eventually verified that the uranium ore mine was a large-scale nuclear reactor, and the layout was really technically sound There’s no way even us modern folks could create something like that. So when was it built? Two billion years ago, and it operated for 500,000 years. ...."

Statements like these are found throughout Li Hongzhi's writings. He is said to have recently claimed to be God. He has practiced Qi Gong since he was six years old. This is an example of a narrowly focused altered mental state. He functions normally within his group of common belief set. If he appeared at an emergency intake desk he would most likely be diagnosed as Schizophrenic.

Prevention:  This  section is now repeated at the bottom of most pages.

The rare occurrence of the injury establishes that is difficult to create enough exposure to cause an injury. But when it does happen the consequences are serious, possibly fatal.

Our personal experience was intermittent human traffic during eight-hour workdays for thirty calendar days.

If you have a tower CPU mount it under your desk. That's the way they position it in a cubicle. The hard drive busy light is about the height of your low peripheral vision if you put the tower on the desk. Desktop reading of text or writing notes beside the keyboard on the side of the monitor away from the tower makes the blinking hard drive busy light appear to approach from behind when you turn to view the screen again.

If you have a computer work station/desk in which you turn ninety degrees to write or do other non computer work, turn off the monitor when you turn aside. Remove screen savers in this instance. The movement, animation for example, in your screensaver, two-dimensional movement, might well be detected by your peripheral vision at close range. Alternately cover the monitor screen.

All home, apartment, or dorm computer workstations are in unprotected workspace. To change that put the computer in a quiet room with no possible movement. If that is not possible in a dorm or apartment position the computer so that your peripheral vision can see only stationary walls as you use the computer in a busy room. In Cubicles and 'Systems Furniture' these protective features are achieved with peripheral vision blocking panels and corner seating positions. It is called 'Cubicle Level Protection.'

If you use computer or CD-ROM games for many hours day after day, the game playing position should follow the same rules as the computer workstation. Battery operated games will not run long enough on a single rechargeable battery to cause a risk for SPVP.

Although a laptop does not have a visible blinking light in peripheral vision the same rules apply to your work position.  There should not be human traffic moving to you from behind. There should be nothing behind you, which could enter your subliminal peripheral vision field as you turn your head while working at the laptop and be mistaken for threat movement.

Only movement coming from behind you into your Subliminal Peripheral Vision can cause a peripheral vision reflex. If the movement source approaches you from ahead then enters your Subliminal Peripheral Vision from conscious sight there can be no peripheral vision reflex.

Repeated for Emphasis:

A single session or rare sessions will not cause this problem.

It is the same day after day long hours of play or computer use with detectable movement in ‘Subliminal Peripheral Vision,’ which would form the basis of a risk for SPVP injury.

Exposure can be cumulative

The brain’s detection system only evaluates movement. There is little recognition of the nature of the object in peripheral vision. If you have several hours exposure from human traffic at the library, while reading at an open table or seated in a reading room chair, followed by long hours watching TV with a critically misplaced ceiling fan sweeping detectable shadows around the room, the combination of those two behaviors might cause the problem. The suggestion is that either activity alone would not consume enough exposure time even if the critical movement is present.

Forum Questions

Several visitors have posted a question about exposure. They argue that if the exposure explained on this site were true members of dance troupes and drill teams would be falling out every day.

Those performing groups who must dance, drill, or lead audience cheering must coordinate their actions with  the other members of the group. This requires constant attention. This is an alert status.

The object in Qi Gong is to correctly perform the movements, The mental state can be likened to a Zen state of blank mind. In that state of private concentration you are activating your peripheral vision warning system. You can see those in front of you but when you "zone out" you can be exposed with visual Subliminal Distraction.

The same situation is true in cases of doctors who operate as part of a team. When you interact with those around you no vision reflex is triggered. There are examples on the Space Station page. NASA is unaware of the problem and does not provide protection for astronauts. Psychotic mental breaks have happened in Russian space missions, Soyuz-21. The sources of this information are linked on the Astronauts & Insanity site page.
