This site is about a conflict of human physiology that shaped history but was undetected  until the 1960's.

In the entire history of man on the planet Earth this phenomenon was discovered only once.

It caused mental breaks for office workers.

You will find this material hard to believe.

This phenomenon is explained in first semester psychology lectures where students don't believe it either.

For that reason I wrote a demonstration that will allow you to experience the phenomenon.

April 2008

The Finnish National Police have published a picture of Pekka-Eric Auvinen's bedroom computer. He had placed it beside a floor length mirror on a closet door. In that position every time the closet door was closed and he sat with his peripheral vision toward the mirror he could subliminally detect movement due to his reflection in the mirror.

On November 7,2007 he shot and killed eight other students before committing suicide at his Jokela school near Helsinki, Finland.

A 600 page report was released with 2000 pages withheld. Bullying and anti-depressant drug use were given as reasons for the event.

There was no mention of Subliminal Distraction.

This is the fifth shooting event that can be correlated with Subliminal Distraction based on evidence reported in news accounts.

Unlike the Virginia Tech shooter the Redlake shooter, Mark Barton, and Jason Weed gave no warning.

These workstations do not have Cubicle Level Protection. While a hour or so in this lab will not cause enough exposure for a mental break like Jeff Weise had to cause the shooting, exposure is cumulative.

Emails and letters were sent to the school, Tribal Council, and Redlake News the source of this photo.. They received the warning because this site got hits from Paul Bunyon Rural Phone Cooperative.

The only positive thing to say is the new CPU cases do not have bright blinking lights on them.

Nothing has been done to warn students or to provide Cubicle Level Protection where it is needed.

Red Lake Shooting

Everyone is looking for the cause or motive of the shooter. They will not find it.

These shootings are being caused by a conflict of physiology. The conflict was discovered by design engineers in the 1960's It is known to cause a dissociative mental break in Knowledge workers using poorly designed office workspace.   (The Modern Cubicle, site page.)

How does this connect to the shooting? The shooter was on a home bound program due to a previous policy violation. He had a computer workstation at home. During cold weather he would have spent an increased amount of time on the computer.

School shooters in prison have psychiatric symptoms. One hears voices and thinks someone is watching through the heating vents when he showers. (Heritage School Shooting , Conyers Ga.)  This argues he had a mental event to cause the shooting.

Around the world are a group of mental events called Culture Bound Syndromes. Amok from Malaysia involves sudden attacks on people, innocent bystanders, and often the attacker must be killed to stop the attack. Going Postal is a CBS from the United States. The shooter attacks persons in the workplace. The shooting victims are both friends of, as well as  others little known to the shooter.  This site states a connection between shootings that appear to have little in common. Most have no clear motive. In some of the cases the grievance stated was not of a nature that it alone would have caused the event.

If -  (Repeat IF) - Weise accidentally created the design problem at home and there was repeating detectable movement in the room, or a blinking light on the computer,  he was a victim of the phenomenon. When the mental episode or break happened he acted out the delusion by shooting classmates at school.

The description of him laughing while shooting indicates some  disruption of his normal mental process.

An entry in his Live Journal site has him attempting to type while watching a movie running on his TV.

"As I sit here typing up my musings I listen to Cheech & Chong Up in Smoke, the movie. Occasionally shifting my eyes from screen to screen, trying to balance out typing and observing."

Why is this significant?

It's not that he tried to two things at the same time. The clue is that he only had to shift his eyes to switch from one monitor screen to the other.

When one monitor is positioned so that it falls into peripheral vision while a second monitor is being used, movement from action in a movie or screen saver on a computer can be detected. That would cause the subliminal effect described on this site.

The journal entry he left does not give enough information for confirmation. A picture that reconstructs that situation might prove that he was a victim of a mental break and that the dissociative or psychotic episode associated with the phenomenon on this site was the cause of the shooting.

This would be the first hard evidence that the conflict of physiology is causing mental events and shootings.

The following explanation is NOT in psychology lectures.

The phenomenon is Accidental Operant Conditioning. Peripheral vision is used as a channel to the subconscious. When your brain detects movement in peripheral vision it attempts to create a Peripheral Vision Reflex. Those reflexes are created below thought, reason, or consciousness. They are essentially created at the level of your subconscious.  Humans have the ability to ignore  the reflexes but our physiology of sight will not allow us to "stop seeing" the movement that triggers them. We can't tell our brain to stop detecting that movement and trying to force a reflex.

The internal brain signals to cause a reflex act as stimulus as your conscious mind attempts to assign meaning to those subliminal signals. The common understanding is one of being watched or of having something behind you. (Discussions on Forums where I have posts about this phenomenon revealed that.) Each mind experiences this differently but the stimulation would act to magnify ongoing disputes or beliefs of persecution.

Weise would have been subject to the stimulus anytime he used the computer but the home bound assignment would have increased the exposure.

Every thing he said and did would have been shaped and reinforced by that stimulus. As the threshold for a mental break approached he acted out the delusional episode.

Operant conditioning has previously been discovered to be the cause of strange behavior. Jumping Frenchmen of Maine Syndrome (circa 1880) was  eventually believed to be caused by operant conditioning but the researchers were unaware the conflict of physiology existed. How to Investigate a School Shooting for evidence of Subliminal Distraction

What do you look for?

You are looking for something his brain could have mistaken for threat movement to cause repeating, subliminal, peripheral vision reflexes.

 In a business office this is usually other staff members walking beside an some one sitting, working, at an unprotected desk. Only stimulus from behind will be detected to cause a peripheral vision reflex.

On the Everquest Connection page it was a large fish in a lighted aquarium close enough that Tommy Stein could reach out and touch the glass with his right hand as he played Everquest in a darkened room.  (An email from Ben Stein confirmed the tank contents.)

Blinking lights on the computer CPU can be mistaken by your brain for threat movement as you turn your head while using the computer. When you turn your head toward the blinking light it appears to approach from behind as it enters your vision field, relative movement.

Cubicle installers require blinking lights be out of sight, under the desk. It follows that if the computer CPU case was on top of the desk and had a bright blinking light it is suspect to be the cause of the episode and shooting.

A slow dial up Internet connection would cause the hard drive busy light to blink constantly. Small values for RAM storage require file swapping to the hard drive thus causing blinking. Downloading large files such as pictures also cause constant blinking.

The length of time spent on-line, not the content of the sites visited, is important. It would only take a few hours of exposure daily to eventually cause the mental break. In cold weather and at home with little to do, he may have spent enough time on the computer to cause this problem.

Other possibilities for this stimulation are oscillating fans, heaters, ceiling fans or the shadows of fan blades if they appear to approach from behind.

Lava lamps, toys, pets can all supply the stimulus to cause a peripheral vision reflex. Anything that blinks or moves near the computer or study area is suspect.

If non computer work was done beside the computer workstation a screensaver might supply stimulation if there is enough contrast and the image appears to approach from behind or increase in size.

Subliminal Peripheral Vision is supplied by rods on the retina and is black and white vision. The speed of approach is detected by the rapid increase in size of the object. Peripheral vision is monocular, each eye seeing a different field. Conscious sight is binocular, color vision.

This problem is caused by normal features in our physiology of sight. It is not a strange or unusual occurrence, but the full mental break is rare.

In the business office eight hour days limit exposure. Interactions with other workers reveal when something is going wrong. When the victim is alone the beginning signs will be unobserved. Serious negative mental states can be produced as the exposure continues.

In the case of the Everquest Addiction situation of 2001, Shawn Woolley, an adult living alone, committed suicide. Tommy Stein's parents sent him to a outward bound camp. Once he was away from the defective computer game playing workstation, Tommy recovered with no treatment. Hard to Believe?

Keep in mind that almost no one believes this the first time they hear it. Most people are unaware that humans have two vision systems, conscious sight and peripheral vision.

The phenomenon uses peripheral vision as a subliminal channel to the subconscious. This allows operant conditioning to shape beliefs without the subject being aware anything is happening.

Paranoia is an early outcome. When this paranoia is directed toward a dispute or becomes part of an aggressive belief set the outcome can be tragic.

When I spoke with the cold case officer about a disappearance in Atlanta, he remembered that the Atlanta Police Department had a problem with the phenomenon.  The Atlanta Police Department  switched to Cubicles.  Mary Shotwell Little Disappearance

In 1999 Mark O Barton killed is wife and two children with a hammer then shot workers and friends at two day trading businesses in downtown Atlanta. Notes he left describe unbearable fear. He sought help believing he was having a mental break down.   Barton committed suicide when surrounded by police.    Barton Shooting The day trading companies failed to provide Cubicle Level Protection for traders.  In addition Barton had as many as three computers he used at home.

Culture Bound Syndromes, these mental events have happened for a long time.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association has included Culture Bound Syndromes for the first time. Windigo Psychosis, Icelandic Disease, Arctic Hysteria are all cold weather mental events caused when two or more people are confined in small over-winter housing. The close confinement provides many opportunities for threat movement detection incidents during the winter confinement. 

The American Psychiatric Association does not know that.

Articles have been written that say your Culture can make you mentally ill. But the Cross Cultural Psychology movement and Trans-Cultural-Psychiatry are an attempt to understand these disorders from around the world.

Doctors and mental health professionals believe Culture Bound Syndromes are caused by stress unique to each culture. This site points out that the cause is the same regardless of culture. Each group has beliefs that enter into the understanding of what is happening when the mental break occurs. This produces the apparent unique exotic behavior. But the mechanics to cause those mental breaks are the same.

'Going Postal' is considered a Culture Bound Syndrome of the United States. In Malaysia the same type event is called 'Amok,' as in running amok. There is little understanding of the cause of these events among the mental health community. ... Everyone studying and writing about  these syndromes has been missing one key piece of information, that the conflict of physiology exists.

These last two syndromes are a parallel for school shootings in the United States. They serve as a model for the theory that school shootings are being caused by the conflict of physiology.

Other syndromes have features to suggest they are caused by operant conditioning. Latah, Malaysia, and Jumping Frenchmen of Maine Syndrome are characterized by hyper-suggestibility. In both cases the effected group lives in a single building. Bunkhouses are used in remote lumber camps, and in Malaysia entire villages live in longhouses. Again, closely confined living space would provide many opportunities for threat detection incidents.

School Shooters:

In the case of school shooters taunting, bullying, and physical assaults form a parallel to culture and  belief set. Operant conditioning acts to shape that belief set and raise the agitation of the victim until he acts out the delusional episode by shooting the tormentors when the expected mental break happens.

There are hints in the stories of other school shootings.  Information is not available to investigate them. No one was aware of the phenomenon and no effort was made to collect information that would show a connection if one existed.

This phenomenon has been happening through recorded history but until this site was published there was little knowledge of what caused the mental breaks, Nervous Breakdowns. Dissociative mental break is the new name for Nervous Breakdown.

Take Pictures

Whether or not you believe this possibility is the cause of the shooting,  take pictures of any work areas the shooter would have used in the home. Computers are not necessary to cause the mental break. This problem was discovered long before computers were available. But the computer workstation should be investigated first.

Nothing will help assuage the grief of those who have lost children. But having a goal of proving the true cause of this shooting will supply a meaning for those parents.

Repeat

The only way to make a connection, if it exists, is to examine the home and any study or computer workstations.

If a connection can be made it would provide a basis to inform all other students and their families of a way to prevent future shootings.

If this is not the problem an inspection will reveal no source of repeating detectable movement near a computer or study area.

I suggest editing the Prevention section at the bottom of this page and handing it out to all students in your school system.

Peripheral vision reflexes are created at a level in the brain below thought, reason, and consciousness. For this reason when you choose to ignore movement that is distracting to you and that is positioned in your Subliminal Peripheral Vision you lose track of it.

Connetquot High School

A new Columbine type school shooting plot is being reported by the Associated Press. The problem is that school classes are not held at Connetquot High School during the summer. Police have seized the computer of the unnamed fifteen year old and found that he attempted to buy black powder and firearms on the Internet.

One version of the story mentioned that the suspected student has been suspended for  threats during the regular school year. Michael McDonough, 17, who worked with the young teen at a Long Island McDonald's where the spiral notebook with the plot was found in the  parking lot, has been arrested. He attended Sachem North High School, was receiving mental health counseling.

There was no mention of any evidence that could be used to suggest he had SD exposure.

Conflict of Physiology

The conflict of our physiology explored  on this site is that although you can ignore  peripheral vision reflexes, you cannot stop seeing the movement that causes them. You cannot tell your brain to stop subliminally detecting that movement and attempting to force  the reflex.

Peripheral Vision Reflexes

Peripheral vision reflexes are an evolutionarily developed, retained, warning system. For early man or pre-humans to survive they needed a system to warn  them of predators approaching from behind. To function it must work all the time no matter what  you are doing. If you had the ability to turn the brain system off at will, it could not warn you in critical situations.

The act of concentrating on something at arm's length, in your hand for instance, causes physiological changes in the eye.

When you focus on a close object your eye accommodates by changing the shape of the lens.  This shape-change expands the area covered by Subliminal Peripheral Vision.

Plitz's reflex, or Attention Reflex, changes the size of  your pupil. This floods the retina with ambient light desensitizing the rods so that only a large movement close by will trigger a reflex.

This journal entry describes an activity that would cause Subliminal Distraction and repeating subliminal Vision Reflexes.

Placing the movie monitor in that position meant that as he used the computer, he had to dissociate slightly to read the screen for comprehension. During those periods  he would have subliminally detected movement from the images in the movie. When there is enough contrast and the movement is vigorous enough it would have been sufficient to cause a peripheral vision reflex. Because the detection of threat movement to cause a vision reflex happens subliminally the victim is never aware that anything is happening.  A picture of his room and the location of the two screens would help.

An incident aboard the Belgica on the Belgian Polar Expedition of 1898 demonstrates that exposure to Subliminal Distraction can cause psychiatric symptoms. Quotes from Dr Cook's book, "Through the First Antarctic Night," show the progression of symptoms. Most of the eighteen men recovered. That recovery started when they began outside activities to chop the Belgica out of the pack ice. Only one main was permanently insane.

Campbell County High School  - Tennessee

April 11,2007  A plea deal was reached today. The court had been in the process of selecting a jury and the trial was set to start. Bartley accepted a forty-five year sentence. He will be placed in a juvenile facility until he is eighteen then transfer to adult confinement.

The AP wire has named Kenneth Bartley as the student who shot and killed Campbell County Comprehensive High School Assistant Principal Ken Bruce at 2 pm on November 8, 2005.

Two additional teachers Principal Gary Seale and Assistant Principal Jim Pierce were wounded. Pierce is in serious condition with a chest wound.

Bartley was wounded in the hand with his own rifle in the scuffle after the shooting. (Note: Later reporting said a hand gun was the weapon.)

No additional information on motive is available.

This shooting has been linked to Grand Theft Auto, a video game.

"The controversial video game Grand Theft Auto has reportedly been linked to a murder in an American school.

The game, designed by Edinburgh company Rockstar North, has caused a storm of protest in America where Rockstar, parent company Take Tow Interactive and publisher Sony are embroiled in a legal battle after the game was blamed for the shooting of three police officers in Alabama."

Earlier this year a Stewart County Tennessee bus driver was shot and killed when she stopped to pick up students.

There was an accidental gunshot injury in a school restroom in Jefferson County Tennessee in August.

WDEF channel 12 is reporting the weapon was a hand gun not a rifle as the Associated Press reported. A witness said he concealed it in a piece of paper.

"Student witness :"He had the gun, he had it over a piece of paper like tissue and when he got it out he was kind of like, well you know all this kind of stuff thinking he was big and bad and the take it out and shoots Mr. Pierce like around here somewhere and after that, blood, he looked like he was dying."..."

A news item from the UK said a napkin was the paper used to cover the handgun.

Volunteer TV Channel 8 Knoxville is reporting that Bartley took a pistol to school and was showing it off to friends when someone reported it to the School. He was escorted but not restrained when taken to the Principal's office where he began shooting.

Bartley was placed in Kingswood School and lived in a campus cottage for a year and a half. His parents had placed him there because of unruly behavior and took him out against the staff's recommendation. The school does not take children with violent backgrounds. He apparently left in May 2005.

The source of this information is assumed to be either a trial transcript or book but the article does not give the source. This site argues that all the school shooters had similar exposure Subliminal Distraction. They had accidentally created the "special circumstances" of the 1960's business office workstations. The shootings are outcomes of a dissociative or psychotic mental break. Shooters are acting out delusional episodes.

In the 1960's an accidental discovery of a conflict of physiology led to the creation of the Cubicle to prevent mental breaks for at-risk knowledge workers.

The phenomenon first appeared as Cabin Fever in the 1830's. In Malaysia it is called Amok. The Navajo call it iich'aa. Here in the United States it is called Going Postal. Amok, iich'aa, and Going Postal are Culture Bound Syndromes.
 

A Wikipedia article reports the testimony of Dr. Orin Bolstad.

"In his testimony, which lasted almost four hours, Bolstad said that it was clear to him that Kip suffered from a psychotic disorder with major paranoid symptoms, potentially some form of early onset schizophrenia.

Many of Bolstad's tests indicated that Kip had a major learning disorder, manifested by difficulty spelling and writing. Other tests, Bolstad said, revealed a very depressed, alienated child who sees adults as unfair, arbitrary and untrustworthy. He has very low self esteem, and is manipulative and paranoid.

Bolstad described a number of delusional beliefs that Kip related to him: his fear that the Chinese were going to invade America (Kip stored explosives under his house in order to be prepared); that Disney was taking over the world--the Disney dollar, with Mickey Mouse on the front, would replace the American dollar; that there were chips planted in his head by the government.

Much of Bolstad's testimony detailed Kip's reported auditory hallucinations. They began, according to Kip, in 6th grade. Kip told him that he remembered the first time he heard a voice; it said, "You are a stupid piece of shit. You aren't worth anything." They scared and upset him, he said, and he tried various things to quiet them: biking, watching TV, punching his head. According to Bolstad, Kip said that he never told anyone about the voices because he was embarrassed. He didn't want anyone, especially girls, to think he was crazy. Bolstad also related his discussion with Kip about an incident in 1998 when he had disrupted English class by shouting, "God damn this voice inside my head!" This is the only time before the shootings that any mention of voices was recorded.

Bolstad believed that Kip murdered his parents and opened fire on fellow students the next day (killing two and injuring 25) under the influence of these hallucinatory voices. He described Kip recounting the voices to him: "'My Dad was sitting at the bar [in the kitchen]. The voices said, 'Shoot him.' I had no choice. The voices said I had no choice.' and later, after he killed his mother, 'The voices said, 'Go to school and kill everybody. Look what you've already done.'" During cross-examination, Bolstad stated categorically, "I think the primary thing that was operating in his feeling and need to kill ... were the voices."

When he was asked by the state attorneys about the chance of letting Kip free on the streets, Bolstad said that he did not believe that there was any way to cure Kip's disorder, but that it could be managed with medication: "I would not want to see Kip Kinkle out on the streets, ever, with this condition... without medicine and without an awful lot of structure and support services arranged for him."..."

Evan Ramsey

MSNBC has a program that interviewed Ramsey. He told friends what he planned and there was a group of students gathered at the library to watch the event unfold. Ramsey played Doom with two younger friends. They convinced him that acting out a Doom episode would make him famous.

February 19, 1997, Bethel Alaska, Ramsey took a shotgun to school killed the principal, a student, and wounded two others. Police apprehended him when he failed to commit suicide. He is serving a 210 year sentence.

Virginia Tech April 16, 2007:

TV News programs Fox and CNN are reporting 33 dead and 15 injured at Virginia Tech University. Those wounded at  Norris Hall are being treated at area hospitals. News reports through the day have varied in the number that were believed injured and killed.  The University site now confirms 33 dead as of 10PM Monday night

A 20 year old Asian man, heavily armed, with a vest and belts of ammunition, was seen by students and identified as the shooter . Authorities say the shooter was not a student but had entered the US from China on a student visa and is dead on the scene. Fox news is running a breaking news special with call-ins from students at the school. The man was believed to be looking for a girlfriend.  Doors to the second building were chained shut from the inside. There were about two hours between two shootings. Through the day University security officials would not confirm the two events were connected.

The first student was killed at West Ambler Hall., a co-ed  dorm, at 7:00 AM. A student phoned CNN to say that the shooter had an argument with his girlfriend. When the residence hall advisor attempted to stop the fight the boyfriend shot both of them. The second shooting about  9:45 AM, was at the opposite end of the campus. The second scene was in Norris Hall an engineering building. It is unknown what the shooter did in the time period between the two shootings. (These stories are unconfirmed at 2:50PM EST.) The president of the University read a statement saying there were multiple injuries at the first scene. A hospital spokesman said there were two injured brought to the hospital around 7:30 AM.

The amount of armament the shooter had plus the preparation to chain and  lock the doors indicates a well planned event. There had been bomb threats two weeks earlier and it is believed that the shooter was testing security response time with the fake threats.  The ATF has recovered two 9mm handguns or one 9MM and one .22 caliber handgun. There are different stories in cable news reporting. 

MSNBC has a story quoting a student in the classroom that the shooter looked into the class twice before entering and shooting. He said nothing and had a blank expression on his face. Of the professor and twenty five or so students only four walked out and two of those were wounded. When the shooter left the room they blocked the door. He returned and shot through it several times. None of those through the door shots hit anyone.

VT Police broke through the chained doors and followed the sound of gun shots to the second floor. Just as they reached that level the shots stopped. The gunman had committed suicide.

VT Police have identified the shooter as Cho Seung Hui, a 23 year-old permanent legal resident from Korea. He was an English major living on campus in Harper Hall.

Seng-Hui came here from South Korea in 1992. He was a resident in a nearby area of Virginia. His class work in creative writing was so disturbed that he was referred for counseling. The Tribune cited a confidential source as saying Cho left a note with unspecified complaints in his dorm room. He had set a fire in the dorm room in the past and is said to have been involved in stalking women.

The common question of why? is unanswered. Most say it makes no sense.

Key information in an interview on MSNC's Scarborough Country with Kran Grewal, a suite mate of Cho's. was that Cho worked on papers with his laptop in the common area of the dorm Suite. The interview aired in the first fifteen minute segment of the show.

This means that Cho would have been exposed to Subliminal Distraction as he ignored suite mates in the common room while he used the laptop.

The usual psychobabble is being put forth as the reason why Cho carried out the shooting.
