There are only limited facts to support a Subliminal Distraction explanation for his suicide. 

News reports mention roommates, plural.

Other comments say he was an honor student.  

The suicide happened suddenly without warning.

Mellers told his roommates he was waking to the store for a soda. He did not return prompting them to start looking for him.
